"Installation from initial contact to completion of installation EXCELLENT. At 92, I hope I never have need of the generator switching on, but knowing it is there and , hopefully, ready surely reduces stress. All telephone contact remarkable in today's world. Each voice strong and professional. That alone was encouraging. Follow through went very well. Would definitely recommend! Gave value of money a 5, but really have no way of knowing until such time as might lose power. Overall, quality performance!"

"The technician Nicolas was very friendly and easy to work with. Thanks to his efforts are ducts are now clean. He used a dedicated vacuum machine with a rotating brush that was very effective. He finished our two story house in a little over three hours."

"Scott Denny and his very experienced crew, arrived exactly when they said they would.  The price was in line or less expensive than other estimates.  The work ethics of all the workers was impressive.  Every thing they installed works perfectly.  Overall, my impression is that Denny's Electric takes a lot of pride in their work .  It was clear that they were not trying to "upsell" us on anything and also that any work they did would be done safely and properly.   Finally, they cleaned up after themselves beautifully.
We'll definitely use them again for any electrical needs.

"Michael did a great job of upgrading a service panel as well as trouble shooting and installing a hard wire whole house fire alarm/smoke detector system. We have older dogs in the house and got tired of false alarms due to bad batteries that died out early. Our next project with Michael is a whole house generator install."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

The average cost to install a home generator is $5,200, but total costs can range from $500 to $18,000 or more. The final price depends on several factors, including the generator's size, type, brand, fuel source, and the cost of labor and assembly. The generator's size is the most significant cost factor, as units that can power larger homes with higher energy demands cost more.

Cost breakdowns by generator type are typically as follows:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500–$2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000–$6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000–$18,000

To ensure you get the right size unit for your needs without overpaying, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load of your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes from qualified installers to find the best fit for your budget.

If you have a transfer switch properly installed, the generator and main electrical power cannot feed the system at the same time. However, you should still shut off the power at your main circuit breaker panel before activating the generator. If you do that, you’ll simply need to shut off the generator and reset your circuit breaker once the local power comes back on.

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

In most cases, there are no tax credits available for home generators. However, that’s a general statement that applies to federal tax credits, so you might have access to state or local tax incentives. You can check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) for more information about your area. If you hire a reliable home generator installer, they should also know if there are any state or local perks you can use to reduce your installation costs, including tax breaks and rebates.
