Marble is a porous natural stone that needs sealant to minimize staining. Leaving this type of countertop material sealant-free means any liquids left on the surface will quickly absorb into the stone, discoloring it and dulling the sheen. If your recycled glass countertop contains a cement binder, it’ll require an additional layer of protection. Seal these countertops once or twice a year. Use a concrete sealant and finish it with a food-safe wax for a gorgeous and shiny finish. Otherwise, just clean the countertop regularly and always use a cutting board.

Budget-friendly alternatives to granite include quartz, laminate, or solid surface materials. Quartz naturally mimics the look of granite, or homeowners can choose a laminate designed to resemble the natural stone for a much lower cost.

A minimum overhang of 10 to 12 inches is generally recommended for countertop or island seating to provide enough legroom. For increased comfort, an overhang of 15 to 18 inches is ideal, allowing for more space and a relaxed experience. However, a 10-inch overhang can be sufficient in certain situations, such as for bar-height countertops, when using small stools, or in smaller kitchens where space is limited. Taller countertops may also require less overhang than shorter ones. Ultimately, you should consider your specific needs for legroom and measure to ensure the overhang fits comfortably within your kitchen's layout.
