"Hired G&R to fix up my deck, stain it, and paint a shed. The work involved replacing all of the horizontal hand rails, and tightening the floor boards. G&R stained the entire deck by hand (including the lattice work). Gave me a good price and stayed with that price. The deck was 35 years old, but you couldn't tell by looking at it now. My neighbor hired them to do some landscaping work after seeing them work on my property. Willie was easy to work with. Would definitely hired them again."

Customers say: Quality work

"I highly recommend Steve & Sons. We hired them to redo the siding on our house. We were very particular about what we wanted and made it clear that we had high expectations. Steve & Sons definitely exceeded our expectations and we would highly encourage anyone looking for quality workmanship to contact Steve. Steve and his son, Steve, showed up for the estimate right away, they gave us a fair price, Steve came back to measure and double checked which materials we wanted, and then started the job over July 4th weekend. Steve constantly made sure we were happy with how the job was coming out and if we had any alterations we wanted made, he made sure things were done to our satisfaction. The scope of the work had to change slightly, but Steve didn't mind and even kept the original quoted price. Steve went above and beyond to help us more than he needed to - he helped us haul out garbage, helped carry in new furniture and kept his cooler full of cold sparkling water to hand out. The best part is that our house looks so beautiful - we couldn't be happier - and we've received so many compliments from neighbors."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Two coats of stain are ideal for the best protection and aesthetic appeal. However, if your decking is made of particularly dense hardwood, you may only need one coat. If you want an intense color, two coats are ideal.

Yes. Freestanding or floating decks are exactly what the name implies—structures with their own support beams. You can build a deck yourself and place it next to a house for the illusion of a connected deck without the hassle. Or you can construct it in a separate part of your yard for a dedicated outdoor entertainment space. For the purpose of removing a freestanding deck, the steps are the same as an attached deck, but you don’t have to cut the deck away from the home.

Building a deck without a permit could lead to fines for both the homeowner and the contractor. The exact penalties will depend on your state and municipal building laws. You might also be required to remove the deck and apply for a permit before you can build another. While it might be tempting to skip the permit to save a few bucks, it’ll cost you much more if you’re caught.

No, you don’t need a permit to repair and replace a few boards on an existing deck. However, if you’re making structural changes to the deck or tearing down the old one and building a new one, you will likely need a permit. Check with your local municipality for the regulations and rules in your area, or ask a local contractor who builds decks for advice.
