"DC Haulers gave us fair price to haul away our old piano. They were curtious and showed up on time to complete the job. There was a minor incident that they quickly resolved it to our satisfaction."

"What a great job these folks did. We basically were only moving furniture, as we had "pre-moved" most of our clothing and knick-knacks, but what a great job they did with furniture: taking apart and reassembling furniture, wrapping and protecting finishes, and securing our goods on their truck. They did move one closet of clothing, hanging it in wardrobe boxes and rehanging at our destination. They were as busy as bees throughout the process. I highly recommend Moving APT."

"We recently bought a home and the previous owners left junk everywhere, including half an above-ground pool, and an old broken piano that was very heavy. We're getting older and the mess was very disheartening. Not only was Gene efficient, professional, and thorough--the entire process was better because of him and his wife's friendly professionalism. Thank you, Packrat!"

"This review is long overdue. These two individuals actually drove me to U-Haul, helped me pack a unit, unpack it, repack one, talk to U-Haul management for me and drove me back home. They were patient, professional, friendly and I am going to hire them again and will refer them to my friends and family."

Hauling questions, answered by experts

One of the best ways to prepare for a home biohazard cleanup is not to touch anything. Do not remove belongings, even if they are of value or importance, from the area as they are likely contaminated. It’s essential not to use any cleaning products of your own, as the cleaning company will be using chemicals that could interact with your products.

One thing you can do to prepare is take pictures of your space and belongings that need to be cleaned, especially if you plan on filing a claim with your insurance company. In addition, take time to make a list of items that are valuable, sentimental, or otherwise important. The cleanup company must evaluate these belongings to make sure they are safe.

The most affordable way to get rid of junk often involves a do-it-yourself approach, especially if you don't have a large amount of debris. Start by sorting your items into categories: donate, recycle, sell, or trash.

  • Donate or Sell: Usable goods can be donated to local charities. You can also list items for free or for a low price on platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

  • Use Municipal Services: Your city's regular garbage collection or bulk pickup days can be the cheapest option. However, be sure to check community guidelines for quantity limits and accepted materials. You can also take recyclables to a city drop-off center.

  • Haul it Yourself: If you have a truck or suitable vehicle, loading the junk and taking it to a local transfer station, public dump, or waste disposal facility is a very cost-effective method.

If a DIY approach isn't possible, consider these options:

  • Rent a Dumpster: You can rent a dumpster, fill it yourself, and the rental company will haul it away. This is a good middle-ground if you can do the labor but don't have a vehicle for transport.

  • Hire a Junk Removal Service: While typically the most expensive choice, hiring a professional junk removal team is the most time-efficient and requires the least effort from you. This is a good solution if your city's services won't accept the items or if you are unable to move them yourself.

Costs depend on tree height, trunk diameter, removal complexity, and required equipment.

Pouring chemicals down the sink or toilet is a bad idea. In large amounts, they can damage plumbing and septic system. Tossing them in the trash can cause leaks, harmful fumes, and other problems, too.

Pouring chemicals onto the ground or nearby storm drains is also not recommended. Toxic chemicals can leak into nearby plants, lawns, or even water sources. It’s also illegal to pour out certain substances like used motor oil. Instead, schedule a trip to a local dropoff site for household hazardous wastes. Most local government websites can give you information on where to dispose of these substances.

Ensure clear access to debris, separate hazardous materials, and verify disposal restrictions.
