"Roger is communicative, efficient, knowledgeable, and thorough. He completed a large-scale renovation in my living room and dining rooms, tearing down old plaster walls and ceiling, installing new drywall, canned lighting, new flooring, and trim. He kept me informed throughout the project. I highly recommend Nickel City Repair and look forward to having Roger back for the next project."

"I had a wonderful experience with Sean Duggan, of Duggan Home Services. He replaced the sweep and weather seal on my storn door and he was reliable, responsive, and reasonably priced. When his timing changed, he texted me to keep me updated, which I really appreciated. What impressed me most was the extra care Sean took. He noticed some debris on my sidewalk--not even near the area where he was working--and took the time to blow the sidewalk clean. It was a small gesture, but it said a lot about the kind of person he is and the pride he takes in his work. Sean also went above and beyond the original scope of the job. I needed help replacing a shower fixture because I didn't have the proper tool, and he kindly agree to take care of that for me as well. He was personable, kind, neat and professional, completed everything on time, and did excellent work. I would absolutely hire Sean again. He's a rock star!"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

You can paint over plaster, but repair any damage to the plaster first, or the paint will crack and bubble. You should also prepare the surface of the plaster to accept paint, which gives your paint job the best chance of looking good and lasting a long time. Before applying the color you want, apply a coat or two of primer. Additionally, use latex paint, and choose a latex paint with a satin finish for areas with dampness, like bathrooms.

Whether you can reuse a drywall anchor depends on its type, material, and how it is removed. Plastic anchors, such as expansion or self-drilling types, are generally considered single-use because they are designed to expand and are likely to break or become deformed upon removal. Metal anchors, like toggle bolts, are more durable and can often be reused if they are not damaged during extraction. However, with toggle bolts, the toggle mechanism can fall inside the wall when the bolt is removed, making it difficult to retrieve. If an anchor is damaged or must be cut for removal, it cannot be reused regardless of its material.

It is possible to apply plaster on the interior or exterior of your home, but we don’t recommend it. Plaster is easy to apply in theory, but in reality, it can be a challenging material to work with, and it’s difficult to get the finished product to look clean, even, and smooth. Many DIYers end up calling in a professional afterward to touch up the area or even redo it entirely because of mistakes they made in the process. Hiring a plaster pro will cost more, but it’s usually the best option to achieve high-quality results.

If you only have tiny holes in your drywall (for example, dents or nail marks), you probably won’t need a patch kit. Instead, you can plug the hole with a small amount of spackle. Once the spackle dries, you can sand the area and paint over it—just like you would in the steps outlined above.

A common cause of separation between a wall and the ceiling is truss lift—this can happen to the ceiling of rooms directly under the attic when the seasons change and wood building materials dry out, shrink, and shift. Roof trusses often dry out at different speeds, and if the bottom pieces dry out faster than the top pieces, they can shrink and pull the attached drywall away from ceilings and walls, causing cracks. Fortunately, truss lift is only a cosmetic problem, not a structural problem, and you can fix it by separating the ceiling drywall from the roof trusses, and patching the cracks.
