They could not manage their vendors; what was supposed to take a week took two months. The sales rep did not return calls, and you could never get anyone in management on the phone. Random people would show up at unannounced times. The few things that an actual Guardian employee did were they made a huge mess of our newly remodeled office and were rude to our staff. "I’ve never heard of someone who charged $2,502 for opening two locks. This man who changes his name every phone call is a thief. Poor workmanship (his new lock needs to be unlocked and re locked every time if it isn’t the perfect angle) would be a problem at normal rates, but since we weren’t home and a child and a neighbor had to arrange payment he took the opportunity to steal. Dishonest and poor workmanship is a terrible combination. Better burn your money than hiring this conman."

It’s possible, but depends on the design of your lock. Some door locks that lack a keyhole do boast a small hole on the exterior handle or knob. This hole’s primary function is to allow water to drain out of the lock, in addition to giving homeowners an easy spot to insert lubrication. However, you can typically use a paperclip in this pinhole to unlock the door by manipulating the mechanism inside. 

You should replace door locks when you move into a new home since you don’t know who has copies of the key. Other reasons to change your locks include an attempted break-in, when someone moves out of your home, or if you lose a key with an address attached to it.

If you don’t have your original key, the easiest way to obtain a copy is to call a locksmith. For house keys, your locksmith has several options for configuring a new key: 

  • They can input a lock’s identification code into a database to obtain key-cutting instructions.

  • They could analyze the lock cylinder to determine how to cut a new key.

  • They can create an impression of the lock cylinder from which to cut a new key. 

As with any computer, smart locks can be hacked by someone with the technical skills to do so, but most people do not have that ability, making smart locks relatively safe. If you have any concerns about a compromised smart lock, opt for an encrypted smart lock, change your Wi-Fi password, and make sure that you only give out your password to trusted family and friends.
