"Water damage left our ceiling with a 6 inch hole to be repaired before the ceiling could be painted. Bill did a great job plastering, then painted the ceiling within a tight time frame for us. Great work from a friendly craftsman."

"I hired Surtr Construction for electrical at a building I had purchased. They did 2 panel upgrades 200A services and wired 6 office spaces. Work was phenomenal. They had all proper permits ready to go prior to job starting. Code inspector had no issues after work was completed. Will be using then for all Remodel, Electrical projects in future."

"Alex, Tim and Vinny are all hardworking professionals. They discussed all parts of the projects with us as they built an addition as well as a deck with railing and steps. They did excellent work with an eye for detail, clean and neat and removed all debris themselves. I would recommend this Company for all types of work, new and remodeling. We will be contacting them for other projects as they come up. Thank you, Alex, Tim and Vinny."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, most services include necessary frame modifications for proper door fitting. Confirm with your provider.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

Modern brick houses are really stick-built homes with a brick facade for aesthetic purposes only, so most have framing. With genuine brick construction, most homeowners install furring strips over the interior of the brick and then install drywall over those strips to cover the brick wall, so they don’t have traditional framing.

There are a variety of second-story deck privacy ideas depending on your budget and aesthetic. For starters, you might consider fencing or tall privacy railing that masks a good portion of the open deck. A pergola or an awning can provide additional cover and shade. Outdoor curtains are an easy way to add or remove privacy at your convenience, plus they’re a wallet-friendly way to decorate your deck.

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.
