"Of the three inquiries I put out Paul from Elite was the only one to call. Although I wasn't happy with the estimate( who ever is?), he explained all that was to be done and it was apparent that the previous roofer did not do things correctly with regards to our two skylights. I had hoped to get a couple more estimates but as I said only Elite called back . I asked for references and he was happy to provide and all were glowing , so even though I wasn't happy about the final cost the work done was expert and they thoroughly cleaned up afterwards. I hope I won't need them again but I would hire them in an instant should the need arise!"

"Everything looks good so far, it's only been 2 days since the roof was done. Clint and his crew were here at a reasonable hour in the morning and finished up the job quickly. They cleaned up around the house perfectly. So now if the roof holds up for the next 30 years all is well, but with a 10 year warranty I feel pretty confident that all will be well!"

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.

Yes, solar tubes are easier to install than skylights because they’re lighter, smaller, and easier to handle. They also require less roof cutting and have a faster, simpler installation process. This means they’re a more DIY-friendly option for homeowners who want to add more natural light to their homes.

Yes, flat roofs can make use of a skylight or window to allow natural light into the home. When finding the best skylight installer, it’s important to pick a professional with experience working with a flat roof. The installer must pick the right type of window design to match the slight slope of the roof.

A skylight's ability to withstand hail depends on factors like material quality and thickness. Impact-resistant options, such as tempered or laminated glass, fare better against hail compared to standard glass. Proper installation and regular maintenance also contribute to their resilience. While smaller hailstones may not pose a significant threat, larger ones can cause damage. Consider skylight protection methods like covers or screens in hail-prone areas to enhance durability and minimize potential harm.

Yes, you can replace a skylight without changing the entire roof—if the roof is in good shape. First, you need to make sure the roof around the skylight is intact and free of damage. Quality installation is crucial to prevent leaks, including replacing the flashing, which seals the skylight to the roof. While replacing the skylight alone is doable, it can make sense to replace both at once to streamline the work, coordinate the warranties, and reduce the risk of future leaks. If you’re unsure, reach out to a professional for help in deciding the best approach.
