"Long Hill Masonry renovated our front and rear stoops, which after 65 years were slowly falling apart. My husband and I are Thrilled with how they turned out. Within 2 days of our call, Joe Tavella (Owner) came to our home to give us an estimate. We explained what our ideas were and Joe even added further suggestions to improving the design. Joe, through his expertise and knowledge was able to do what 3 other contractors told us they couldn't do. After knowing this and with a fair quote, we asked Joe when can he start the job. The job was then completed in a very timely manner (in 1 day). Joe and his team were neat reliable, efficient, meticulous and took real pride to producing top quality work. End result...Perfection at it's Best! Beautiful stoops to last a Lifetime! Without hesitation we look forward to having Long Hill Masonry do another project for us. Would highly recommend."

"Joe and his crew did an excellent job with the installation of about 1500 square feet of backyard pavers. There are a lot of little decisions that come up along the way and with Joe’s knowledge and experience these were all solved. He was there every day involved with his crew. Price was competitive and reasonable. I highly recommend Long Hill Masonry."

"Bob's team came in today on time, with all the equipment they needed, Removed the sidewalk and chopped the tree roots that caused the walkway to buckle. formed and filled the new space with concrete. All done in about 5 hours. Great job, men were cordial and worked steady on through until the end of the project. and cleaned up afterward. I think my nextdoor neighbor will hire them for his sidewalk. Great job. 5 stars ."

"The F&B crew was great. They showed up when they were supposed to, worked hard all day, and did beautiful work. Jessy helped me find the perfect materials for my jobs. "Hands down the best service I received in a long time. Knowledgeable, Punctual and Reasonable are a few qualities that come to mind. Misael fixed my front steps and also refilled my existing pavers with the right sand that the prior contractor did not do. His attention to detail is on point. He did an excellent job of cleaning up after completing his work, which to me is the biggest selling point for myself. Would highly highly recommend him for your next job!"

Small jobs welcome

"DiMassi and Sons installed a block wall, paths, block steps a replacement stoop and designer portico. No sub-contractors were used for any phase of the work. Sal DiMassi was there working alongside his talented crew every step of the way. They showed up every day until the job was completed, no matter how cold and bleak the weather, and worked until dark. His pricing was fair and more than competitive especially considering the finished job we received. Sal really knows his stuff. In fact, I'm having them come back in the spring to build us a new driveway. I highly recommend DiMassi and Sons Landscaping for any sort of outdoor stone work, but only if you want your job to stand out among all others and be finished in a timely and professional manner."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Unfortunately, there are many disadvantages to stone houses. They are slow to build and the materials are pricey, both of which balloon the total cost. Stone walls require a more robust foundation, which costs more to install. Running plumbing, electrical, and HVAC through a stone house is much more difficult too, so homeowners need to seriously consider if the aesthetic benefit is worth the cost of building with stone. One of the questions to ask a masonry contractor is if a similar aesthetic can be achieved with another material.

Yes, but used or reclaimed bricks can be more brittle, cracked, or uneven than new bricks, so they’re harder to cut cleanly by hand. For that reason, you should take extra care when scoring and striking, and expect a higher chance of breakage. If a brick feels especially fragile, score deeper before attempting to split it.

Most of the time, you don’t need to seal brickwork and can save that money for another area of home improvement. But if your brick is cracking or you live in an area with a lot of excess moisture (either in terms of rain or freezes), sealing can extend the lifetime of your home. But, make sure you use a breathable sealant, like siloxane, to allow the moisture to evaporate on its own.

Yes! Hot glue is an excellent—and temporary—way to spread holiday cheer with Christmas lights without damaging your brick exterior.

The cost of masonry work varies widely depending on the type of masonry along with common cost factors like size, complexity, location, and season. Most exterior masonry work done in freezing temperatures tends to cost more because of the preparation and protection involved to keep the masonry from freezing before the mortar cures properly. The average price ranges per project or square foot for different types of masonry include:

  • Brick wall (fence, garden wall, etc.): $10–$45 per square foot

  • Natural stone wall: $40–$110 per square foot

  • Manufactured stone veneer: $20–$40 per square foot

  • Brick home exterior: $10–$30 per square foot

  • Brick siding: $3–$10 per square foot

  • Stone siding: $35–$50 per square foot

  • Brick step replacement: $20–$30 per square foot

  • Brick wall repair: $20–$40 per square foot

  • Chimney repairs: $160–$750 per project

  • Tuckpointing: $5–$25 per square foot
