"We hired The Masonry Doctor to repair our chimney and are highly satisfied with the completed work. Mr Kanser is a super personable, talented, experienced worker. He gave us a very fair estimate and finished the job under the quoted price. When he left, the site was completely clean with no debris or damage. We definitely recommend The Masonry Doctor for any masonry work and will hire him again for our next project."
"Kevin Koval (President of company) arrived for scheduled initial site review on time (8/29/13). He looked over damage to wall, listened to my concerns, and took photos of site. He discussed some options and said he needed to consult with his mason contractor before he would be able to provide an estimate of repair costs. He said that once mason had chance to review site, I would be contacted with an estimate of cost and time to complete repair. It took several weeks for Mason, Nick Flannery, to call me to schedule his visit for site review. After Mason's site review, it took another few weeks for Kevin to get back to me with cost estimate, $3,200.00, which was $500.00 lower than another company's estimate. I accepted estimate and was told that once he could make arrangements with mason, they would contact me with a schedule for starting work. Nick Flannery arrived the day prior to start day to drop off equipment and supplies. Nick arrived promptly, and excavator operator arrived shortly afterward to begin work. Excavation was completed on first day, and Nick began removing damaged block wall once a reinforcing system had been installed to support upper floor while wall was being repaired. I was very impressed with the level of professionalism Nick displayed while working. but, he was also willing to explain what he was doing, and why, when ever I had any questions. It took three days to complete all the repairs to wall. I was very satisfied with the results. I was very satisfied with the results of the overall project and would not hesitate to call either Adirondack Basement Systems or Nick Flannery in the future for any basement or masonry projects I may have. The longevity of masonry work depends heavily on using the correct materials for the local climate. Contractors must match mortar hardness to existing older bricks to prevent cracking during severe Rome winters. Proper installation requires working in temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit or using specialized heating enclosures. Furthermore, setting footings below the 48-inch frost line and installing correct flashing will protect your structure from heavy snowmelt and seasonal heaving.
Helpful?
When planning masonry work, prepare for expenses beyond the visible brick and mortar. Contractors uncover rotted wood framing or inadequate drainage hidden behind older walls. Extending footings to meet the 48-inch NY frost line requirement adds significant labor. You must also account for mandatory asbestos or lead paint abatement in older homes. Unanticipated chimney relining and required municipal building permits increase the final total for your project.

Watch for spalling or flaking on brick faces caused by Rome's harsh freeze-thaw cycles. You should also look for crumbling mortar joints, leaning chimney stacks, and stair-step cracking in brick courses. Efflorescence, which appears as white salt deposits after a wet spring thaw, signals moisture issues. If you notice water infiltration inside your home or see mismatched mortar from past repairs, hire a local professional to inspect your masonry work.
Helpful?
Completing masonry work serves as vital value protection rather than a dramatic price booster. In the Rome market, buyers expect a structurally sound chimney and a dry foundation. Home inspectors strictly flag deteriorated mortar joints and foundation cracks, which leads to repair demands. Fixing these issues before listing eliminates buyer leverage and improves curb appeal. Sealing drafts through proper brick repair also highlights energy efficiency for buyers facing cold NY winters.
Helpful?
Maintain a dedicated toolkit to monitor and protect your masonry work between professional visits. Keep a flashlight and binoculars for inspecting chimney crowns and foundation walls. Stock stiff natural-bristle brushes to clear away debris before winter arrives. You need masonry-safe ice melt to prevent salt damage on brick walkways. Finally, store plastic sheeting and tarps to protect exposed joints from unexpected rain or sudden temperature drops during the Rome spring.
