Yes, pop-up drains commonly get clogged with hair, soap scum, and toothpaste. It is important to know how to properly clean the drain or get professional help to ensure it remains clear and can drain water effectively.

This scenario is unlikely but technically possible. Clogs that result from water-soluble materials like toilet paper or human waste may eventually break down in the water and allow the water and waste to flow freely once again. To unclog the drain pipe, remove the machine's drain hose from the pipe or sink drain, being careful to contain any water in it. Next, use a plunger for sink drains or a plumbing snake for a wall drain. Test the repair by pouring a small amount of water into the pipe before trying it with a laundry load.

Most clogs are resolved quickly, often within an hour. More complex issues requiring pipe disassembly might take longer.
