The three main types of paint you can use on aluminum siding are acrylic latex paint, self-etching primer, and acrylic paint. Experts say acrylic latex paint offers the best results because it often lasts longer and is easy to clean aluminum siding without removing any of the paint. You need to paint your aluminum siding every 5 to 10 years.

Matching new paint with an old, faded color can be tricky. First, you’ll need to determine whether the paint on your house is latex-based or oil-based. Lightly scrub an inconspicuous area of your home with rubbing alcohol—if the alcohol scrubs away the paint, it’s latex-based. If not, the paint is oil-based. 

Once you have that settled, bring a paint chip or photo of the color to a paint professional and have them mix you a matching paint in the same base (latex or oil). Then paint another inconspicuous part of your house to see if it’s a match.

No, you cannot paint over soot. Soot is a type of contaminant and if not properly removed can cause further damage to your paint and walls. Adding paint directly over soot can result in your paint color changing in appearance and potentially peeling over time. 

While you could conceivably select any paint finish, paintable wallpaper tends to look its best with a flat or eggshell finish. A higher gloss paint might make the texture pop more, but it can look a bit dated once the paint has dried. And don’t worry about whether a water-based latex paint will loosen the wallpaper. You can paint an old wooden fence, but make sure first to do a deep clean (ideally with a pressure washer) and inspect the fence for any existing damage. Painting over dirt and debris will cause your paint to peel. Once you’ve cleaned and repaired any minor issues, use a primer and high-quality satin paint.
