Beacon Water Equipment has been proudly owned by the same local family for three generations. We are determined to give you the highest quality water treatment equipment with the longest warranties, best prices, and best customer service in the area! Equipment is built especially for you upon order and can normally be installed within one week. We are currently servicing Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Madison, Otsego, Tioga, and Tompkins Counties in New York and Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. We can ship replacement filters and other replacement parts anywhere in the US. If you are in the local area, you can stop in with a water sample during our regular office hours for a free water quality test. We will test for hardness, pH, iron, manganese and sulfur (rotten egg smell), with no pressure to buy. If these times aren't convenient for you please call 607-648-5248. To collect a sample for a water quality test you can use an old 16 oz soda bottle, or similar container. Be sure to rinse the container thoroughly before collecting the sample and allow the water to run for about two minutes prior to filling your container. Bring your container in as soon as possible. If you can't bring it in immediately store it in the refrigerator. After 24 hours, you will need to take a new sample. New York State mandates that bacteria tests are to be done by a certified laboratory. We have bacteria test bottles on hand from Microbac Laboratories, Inc. (Monday through Friday) and Sullivan County Labs (Tuesday and Thursday) and samples are picked up at Beacon Water by their private couriers on the days noted at 1pm.

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Installing a water softener could help reduce calcium buildup in your pool if your pool has high calcium hardness as a result of hard drinking water in your home. Pool softeners work by exchanging calcium and magnesium for sodium, so if you use softened water to top off your pool, it may help keep calcium hardness from rising over time. However, it won’t lower the calcium hardness of the water already in your pool and isn’t a practical way to control pool calcium levels. The average water softener installation cost is between $200 and $6,000.

Hard water isn’t unhealthy. It’s safe to drink, bathe in, and cook with. However, it can make some skin, hair, and scalp problems, such as eczema, worse by affecting the pH balance of your skin and hair. Additionally, some people don’t like the taste of hard water, but it does contain minerals that are important to your overall health, like calcium.

Softened water prevents scale deposits, reducing appliance wear, leading to energy savings and longer-lasting household fixtures.

No, hard water isn’t dangerous. The added calcium in hard water can contribute to good bone health. However, it can also cause dry skin and hair. If you have dry skin or hair, consider using a water-softening system to help minimize the minerals in your water. Plus, these systems can also add some sodium to your diet.

The main difference between water softeners and water filters is that softeners remove hard minerals from the water, while filters have more of a blanket effect, removing all contaminants above a certain size. Filters are also much less expensive to install and protect against bacteria and other impurities. Depending on your water supply, you may need both.
