Customers say: Quality work

"My project was to replace my old wood deck with a new composite deck. After having multiple contractors come to house to submit a bid we chose George. George wasn't the lowest bid, nor was he the highest bid, but there was something about George that was immediately apparent, he is a conscientious professional. George was the only one that brought sample materials with him at the time he came to measure and talk about the project. George was also the only one who brought pictures of multiple similar projects. The pictures turned out to be very important for me. While looking at the pictures of the various projects I was able to pick out features from several of the other projects George completed, and incorporate them into my project. George took the time to explain the pros and cons to some of my questions. George is a fantastic skilled professional who takes his responsibility to the project very seriously. His work is second to none. I have many other projects around the house that need attention, George will be my only call. I truly hope you will choose George for your project, you will not be sorry."

Small jobs welcome

"Mike pays special attention to details. Cleaned up everything at the end of each day. Did a great job not only on painting a bedroom and two hallways but did an excellent job in patching a couple of dents in the sheet rock and replacing a bedroom door frame."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, professionals can install new frames, trim, and threshold adjustments for a complete finish.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.
