"This was a very involved plaster repair and remediation job, in a very old house. Grady is the only person (or company) who was willing to take on the job and drive all the way from Pennsylvania to our home in Northern Virginia. There are very few people who do this kind of work anymore (we really searched) and he is an expert in his field. We needed to work around his schedule, because he is in demand in the tri-state area, so it took awhile to schedule the work to begin... but it was worth it."

"We have hired Darwin 4 times across various home projects including: Painting -3 rooms plus Fire mantle, stairs’ guardrails and master bathroom Installation of bathroom accessories. Complete cabinetry change of paint, handles and new panty doors. Not only did he and his team do an excellent job, they were always friendly and communicative. We also used him for custom carpentry work in our landing in den. The most previous work he completed was deck repair and painting. His work is transformative and I highly recommend Darwin and his team."

"From the beginning, James was very professional and thorough in providing me with details about the job. He gave me a fair estimate and the time span for the work. He and his crew arrived on the appointed date, James again reviewed the work to be done and answered all questions. His crew worked diligently the whole day with an appropriate lunch break. I provided James with the color paint I wanted for the room. It was only after he purchased the paint that I realized that it would be too dark. James was patient with my dilemma of trying to decide on a color. He personally escorted me to the paint store to be sure I would get the color I wanted. I can't believe the transformation of my bedroom with this paint job. Allstar did a fantastic job. The clean up was excellent. I am more than pleased with their work. My husband, who was away during this time, was extremely happy with the quality of the work. We will definitely use their service again.

"Professional, did exactly what needed to be done at the price he gave at the estimate, punctual arrival time. Would definitely recommend and use him again. Mario replaced a 3 foot by 2 foot piece of sheet rock with a spackling job that the painter raved above several times on how he has not seen a spackling job like Mario did to many times, an excellent job was performed w/o ever realizing the ceiling was repaired. Over all an excellent job, truly a home advisor pro. Thanks again"

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

While it is possible to repair minor plaster cracks or holes yourself, it is generally not recommended for larger jobs or if you want a professional result. Plaster repair can be difficult in practice; proper wall preparation and achieving a smooth, seamless finish that blends with the existing wall requires experience, especially on textured surfaces. Hiring a professional ensures the repair will be durable and last longer, potentially saving you money over time. A pro can also determine if the cracks are from normal expansion or a more serious underlying issue.

Costs depend on damage size, labor rates, and whether additional services like painting are required.

Damp plaster does dry out, although the drying time depends on several factors, including the type of plaster, the surrounding temperature, moisture content, and the extent of the dampness. Sometimes, it can take weeks or months for wall plaster to dry naturally.

The tool you use to sand plaster will depend on the size of the project. If you’re just working on a small section of your wall to get rid of an uneven spot on the surface, hand-sanding might work. However, for larger projects, a drywall sander can make a huge difference when it comes to both time and elbow grease—and an orbital sander can help for detailed areas such as around ceiling fans.

You’ll want to inspect your plaster walls for signs of damage before painting. If you notice soft spots, deep cracks, bubbling, or areas where the plaster is crumbling or pulling away from the wall, it likely needs repair. While small hairline cracks are common and likely cosmetic, you should address larger issues before painting to ensure a quality, smooth finish.
