"This was a very involved plaster repair and remediation job, in a very old house. Grady is the only person (or company) who was willing to take on the job and drive all the way from Pennsylvania to our home in Northern Virginia. There are very few people who do this kind of work anymore (we really searched) and he is an expert in his field. We needed to work around his schedule, because he is in demand in the tri-state area, so it took awhile to schedule the work to begin... but it was worth it."

Complete cabinetry change of paint, handles and new panty doors. Not only did he and his team do an excellent job, they were always friendly and communicative. "From the beginning, James was very professional and thorough in providing me with details about the job. He gave me a fair estimate and the time span for the work. He and his crew arrived on the appointed date, James again reviewed the work to be done and answered all questions. His crew worked diligently the whole day with an appropriate lunch break. I provided James with the color paint I wanted for the room. It was only after he purchased the paint that I realized that it would be too dark. James was patient with my dilemma of trying to decide on a color. He personally escorted me to the paint store to be sure I would get the color I wanted. I can't believe the transformation of my bedroom with this paint job. Allstar did a fantastic job. The clean up was excellent. I am more than pleased with their work. My husband, who was away during this time, was extremely happy with the quality of the work. We will definitely use their service again.

"An artist is only as good as their canvas. Nothing holds more true than having the right sheetrock as a base for any construction or renovation project. And, responsiveness and communication are key to being comfortable hiring someone and bringing them into your home. It starts with Mario at Champion, who responded within minutes to any inquiry both before and during the project. Next comes Richie and his crew who skillfully installed all of the sheetrock while keeping the place as tidy as possible after each day. Finally, comes Carlos and his team who was pitched as the "Michelangelo of Spackling." He really is. On top of that, all the guys that were here are really nice, which is a bonus. I am a stickler when it comes to paint. We've all been there, spending hours prepping the surface when it was supposed to be "paint-ready." Aside from some very minor spots to sand, their work was absolutely paint-ready. We had an extension added to an existing room with layers of plaster and sheetrock and were worried about the old and new surfaces matching seamlessly. Not only did the team fur up the the new area, the entire room was skim coated to perfection. After paint, we can't even tell where the transition is. Overall, I can't say enough good things about Champion. Their prices were competitive and they did the work on time and on budget. I highly recommend them for any interior project without hesitation and I'd use them again in a heartbeat."

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on damage size, labor rates, and whether additional services like painting are required.

Although they are used for similar tasks, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum and is primarily used for large-scale projects like taping and finishing seams on new drywall. Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it a thicker compound best suited for small wall repairs like filling nail holes or cracks, as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. For small repairs, either product can be suitable. However, you can use joint compound for small jobs in place of spackle, but you cannot use spackle for large-scale taping and mudding projects.

Yes, you can install drywall over plaster, but there are important factors to consider. While it can create a smooth, flat surface, it is often not the best approach. Installing drywall over plaster will increase the wall's thickness, which can cause issues with existing window and door frames that may no longer fit. You might also need to adjust power outlets to keep them accessible. A better, though more expensive, option is to remove the old plaster and lath entirely before installing new drywall. Drywalling directly over plaster seals in the old material, and if any problems arise later, you will need to remove both layers down to the structural beams for repairs. Given the potential complications, this job is best handled by professionals.

Plastering lasts for around 15 to 20 years without needing repairs or maintenance in most cases, and with proper upkeep, plastering can last a lifetime—sometimes more than 100 years. Plaster repair costs between $1 and $3 per square foot, and you may need these services once every 15 to 20 years or so unless you have a harsh climate where humidity changes are a constant issue. You can also opt to skim-coat plaster for between $0.90 and $1.30 per square foot, which may serve you better in the long run.

If your premixed drywall mud is dried out or has begun to set in the bucket, you may be able to revive it by adding warm water and stirring. However, the first and most important step is to scrape off any hard, dried bits of drywall that may have accumulated toward the top of the container and throw them away because they will not easily reconstitute back into the drywall mud mix.
