They got up there, which is no small feat because the roof is very steep, and looked at the problem areas I had told him about. While they were up there, they applied caulk to a number of places that looked like they needed it. We then talked on the phone, and Todd gave me his opinion of what was best to do. He explored several different options with me, and was very detailed in answering my questions. I believe he gave me a reasonable price for what he recommended, and I believe that what he recommended would fix the problem. And to top it off, when I asked him how much I owed him for coming out and caulking where he did caulk, he said, "nothing.? He wouldn?t let me pay him! Said he didn?t do much, and wasn?t even sure it would work. I offered gas money (they drove about 40 minutes from King Ferry), and he said, ?Nope. This is part of the job.? I appreciate the honest counsel on our problems. He could have easily just told us we need a whole new roof.

He rebuilt two chimneys for us, including new flashing around each. He also sealed two "ashes chutes" under each of our fireplaces (they filled with water during rain and poured out into the basement!). He did all this for $1,000, which I thought was very reasonable. He was there for two full days. He also accompanied me to several homes that we were considering purchasing in order to give me estimates for necessary repairs. He did this as a free estimate service. His expert opinion on these homes helped us avoid buying a home with serious structural defects, and/or out-of-control future expenses. He was professional, prompt, courteous, and a joy to work with. I would highly recommend him, and will use him again in the future. I suddenly had to find an excavator to come out immediately to do the digging, or go another night without heat. Frank Palmer got here 10 minutes after my phone call, dug the entire ditch, helped the propane guy lay the pipe, and covered it back up.
Update 11/30/2012: Initially, I scored every category an and quot;Aand quot; for Mr. Palmer. But, I've been asking him for a receipt showing the amount I paid him for the digging he did for us on 9/28. I needed this because the propane company was going to pick up the cost, since the excavating was needed due to an omission on the part of their salesman. I've called and asked him 3 or 4 times, and each time he has assured me that he would send it. He even called back after I left a message and made sure he had my correct address. But then he's just never sent it. I finally had to contact my bank and have them send me a copy of the canceled check, which I then forwarded to the propane company for reimbursement. Thankfully, the company saw that as sufficient proof of payment without his receipt.
I don't know if he thought I should not get reimbursed, and so he wasn't going to help me, or if he really just kept forgetting. Once in their shop, we assumed that they would inspect and access the necessary work to repair the appliances. They just started working on them without providing any time or cost estimate or even to tell us what was wrong. After about a week, I was told that the 2-drawer refrigerator was repaired but they were still working on the ice maker. I had asked if they could at least deliver the refrigerator and was told that they can not (or would not) deliver them separately. As months went on, I would call with regular frequency to find out the status only to be told that someone would call me back later. Of the two dozen times I called over the almost 6 months they had the appliances, only 2 phone calls were ever returned. Eventually, I called one Friday at 4:30 p.m. and got an answering machine telling me that they were closed and their hours were Monday through Friday, 8-5. I left a scathing message saying that I was fed up with the lack of returned phone calls and information and insisted that someone call me back the following Monday. As expected, Monday came and went without a phone call. Finally on Tuesday, someone called me to tell me that they appliances were fixed and ready to be installed and that someone would call me Wednesday or Thursday to set up a time to install them as well as give me a cost. As expected, no phone call was ever received. We didn't know when they were going to arrive on Friday as they never called to let us know and after re-installing all the appliances, demanded to be paid on the spot for an amount we had no idea what was going to be. Luckily we had the money to do so, but if you don't happen to have a spare couple thousand dollars in your account when they show up, you might be in trouble. Absolutely horrible experience and torture to deal with."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/ny/hudson/ackermans-appliance-reviews-2192563.htm"},"position":10}]}
Gas Fireplace Repair reviews from real Angi homeowners in Ogdensburg, NY
They responded wonderfully when their very young and inexperienced salesman failed to show up for the appointment to scout the property out for best tank placement. The result was that when the installer dug up the ground to do the installation, he inadvertently cut some electrical lines....

"I called for a free estimate, Justin came promtly and inspected the chimey. He showed me pictures of the problems and spelled out all the options. I explained to him that my cellar has floode due the problems and was anxious to get the repairs done. Justin quoted a price that was fair and much lower then any other estimates. To my surprise he said that he could do the job that day. He kept sending me pictures as the work progressed so I knew exactlywhat he was doing. He was professional and honest about what needed to be done. I was more then pleased with him and the company. I highly recommend .Chimneys are us."

Yes, it can be worth installing a gas fireplace, depending on your home heating needs. The cost to install a gas fireplace can be much lower than the cost to install a comparable wood-burning fireplace. The convenience of starting a fire with the flip of a switch and turning it off just as quickly makes a gas fireplace a big time saver over starting and maintaining a wood-fueled fire. A gas fireplace also does not require ash cleanup or frequent chimney cleaning to remove creosote and other buildup that can lead to chimney fires. Gas fireplaces burn and heat much more cleanly than wood fireplaces.
A gas fireplace insert costs about $3,600 to install, on average. The cost to install a gas log insert ranges from about $700 to $6,500, depending on the size, type of insert, how it works, and heating needs. Gas fireplaces need electrical and gas lines installed properly, so hiring a pro is recommended rather than trying to DIY installation.
