They are, however, listed with Diamond Certified. This is a warning to Angie's List users to avoid this contractor. This renovation was a nightmare. For starters, it took about a year and a quarter for a job that was originally supposed to take 6 to 8 weeks. For a large part of that time, the contractor and his subs and their workers were completely out of touch and would not return calls. They became more attentive when I suggested that they had abandoned the job and that I would seek legal remedies. Unfortunately, I had to use that approach multiple times. Now to the actual work. The old bathroom was completely gutted, because there was significant water damage to the flooring due to leakage and to the walls and ceiling due to storm damage. The floor and wall water damage extended into the dining room, necessitating floor and wall repair there as well. The rebuilding seemed to be going pretty well initially, but then we ran into complications. We wanted some improvements: tile flooring, floor heating beneath the tile, built-in vanity and full-width mirrored medicine chest, new recessed light in the ceiling, lighting over the vanity and mirrored medicine chest, lighting in the closet, bi-fold doors on the closet, new pocket door in place of a hinged door for the "water closet" (the separate room containing the shower and toilet) and hinged glass door on the shower in place of the existing sliding doors. The biggest set of blunders came about with the tile work. Because it was improperly installed (tiles not level and misaligned) the entire floor tile work had to be ripped out and replaced, and of course when it came out the custom under-tile floor heating pad was destroyed, necessitating another new floor heating pad to replace the ruined one. The shower tile had to be replaced along with the wallboard underneath because the door opening was not plumb, and the glass door installer would not hang a door until it was plumb. In addition to the walls being out of plumb, the tiles were not installed correctly, and two actually fell off when they were bumped. We also had a strip of expensive decorative tile that was so misaligned that it turned out not to be decorative, but a serious visual detraction. We complained and withheld payment, and the contractor sent in a different set of people to re-do the tile work, to plumb the walls, etc. (The last sub-contractor they sent in to finish up our list of requirements was very good, reliable, and actually communicated with us.) In addition to the problems we had with USA Contractors Group management, Lou's Doors, whom they used to supply our new doors, managed to mess up as well. We wanted a glass insert in the new sliding door between the vanity room and the "water closet," and Lou's Doors said they could do that. Well, we had to send back the sliding door because it was the wrong width, and also had to send back the bi-folds for the closet because they were the wrong height. In addition to the bathroom renovation, we made a side contract for some work in the adjoining dining room and kitchen, mostly for ceiling repair and new recessed lighting with additional switches. As part of the work on the kitchen ceiling, we wanted to have an exhaust fan removed. After removing the ceiling fan, the subcontractor attempted to patch the ceiling with what he called a "California patch" which consisted of nothing more than placing a circle of wallboard in the hole remaining when the fan was removed, then taping around the circle. The result was an uneven ceiling with a circle of wallboard that was held in place only by tape. We would not accept that, and they had to do what they should have initially and replace part of the ceiling with a larger piece of wallboard that spanned across the rafters and was screwed into place. Then they had to make multiple attempts to level the ceiling there. I have to say that we are happy overall with the new lighting and the ceiling repairs. We also learned that we had to monitor everything the workers were doing. Left to their own devices, the bi-fold doors would have been hung wrong, baseboard molding would have been installed wrong around the closet, etc. We wound up paying separately for a licensed plumber to re-install the toilet because the contractor's workers didn't know how to install the new toilet with the increased depth below it due to the new floor tile. The same licensed plumber stabilized the new shower head and re-set the shower controller, which had not been installed properly. In addition we had to contract separately for the glass shower door and the custom vanity/medicine chest. The only reason I did not fire these guys was because I had already paid too much to them for the work they wound up redoing and I could not afford to bring in a new contractor without losing several thousand dollars. So I wound up essentially bullying the contractor into completing the job to the satisfaction of my wife and myself. We learned a lot, at our expense, and I feel sorry for the next contractor we hire, because we will be breathing down his neck the whole time. We had 6 wooden dining room chairs which were my grandmother's (so at least 60 years old, as she died at 90ish); wooden backs, seats worn through and what appeared to be kapok stuffing falling out here and there. Not particularly good quality chairs I don't think, but of sentimental value to me. We also had another, nonmatching wooden chair which I wanted reupholstered in a matching fabric. All had dings and scratches and occasional loose joints, and we had put sticky felt on the bottoms of the legs to avoid scratching our dining room floor. I telephoned to ask if he could do the job, phone was answered promptly and pleasantly by Mr. Hayden himself, appt made for us to bring chairs to him the following day (a Saturday in early June 2013). I did not have upholstery cloth picked out, he said fine to get it elsewhere (he could tell us how much needed after seeing chairs) or he had some we could look at. Address he wanted chairs brought to was different from that listed as Havenhouse Upholstery on Google (it appears on Google as Havenhouse all one word); appeared to be his home when we got there. He had a furniture-filled workshop in his back garage which is where we dropped off the chairs; he had about a dozen different rolls of upholstery cloth of different patterns/fabrics in the back of his minivan and we chose one we liked from that selection (I am perfectly happy with what we chose, but do not consider myself a picky shopper in matters of style -- durability and stain resistance more important as we have kids, and he recommended some of what he brought as more durable than other fabrics, we chose from those). Estimate was $575 for reseating/upholstery/stain guarding and $200 for repairs to chairs (he said refinishing was not recommended for chairs like these, and that was not our focus anyway), paid by check $250 deposit. He said it would take several weeks. Late June I called to check and let him know we would be unreachable for a week, he said he was almost done. As arranged he called me after we returned to arrange pickup, appt made for next day. He stated repairs had been more extensive than estimated and would be an extra $75 (I made no quibbles). Place to pick up was another different address. I had to call to confirm address twice (trouble entering into GPS) but each time Mr. Hayden answered right away himself and was immediately helpful. and quot;Haven House Upholsteryand quot; or similar not seen on signage of building at that address when I arrived so I phoned; he drove to where I was (took 1 minute) and led me back to a storage unit containing a workspace and lots of furniture including our chairs. He helped me load up and I paid remainder by check to him personally, receiving receipt with both Haven House Upholstery and his name at the top which lays out work done nicely but does not include tax line (I have to assume sales tax was included in the price). Quality of the work: seats look great, very comfortable to sit on with good firm/soft balance for both me (short and fat) and husband (tall and thin), fabric fits tightly and is beautifully folded over corners and evenly trimmed underneath, a lot better than the original seats even before they wore through. The fabric we chose had a herringbone pattern which would show minor faults in alignment easily and this was perfectly aligned on each chair. Wood had greatly diminished ding/scratch appearance, still present (as expected) but have to look a lot harder to find them. Joints very stable now, no leaked glue visible (if he used glue; I didn't ask how he made repairs). Unasked, he had replaced the sticky felt pads under each chairleg with the same color and thickness we had used. Overall, I am very pleased with the work quality. Timing and what would and could not be done was all accurately explained in words I could understand. Cost was a bit more than original estimate but I believe the chairs deserved this as he hadn't tested the joints a lot before making his estimate, and this is not a visible problem. I had expected more of a storefront experience given the name and quot;Havenhouse Upholsteryand quot; but reaching and dealing with Mr. Hayden was easy at all times. My only concern is the lack of evidence of having paid sales tax on the receipt, which I did not notice until I got home. I would use him again if needed; he seems to be a real craftsman who cares about quality and that is well worth putting up with a slightly less-than-slick business demeanor. I was accomadated, and several employees worked on my car to insure it was done in time for pickup. Gary showed me the parts he found which needed replacement. ( and called before he actually replaced them. ) On my wife's car, services requested were performed, and he noticed inspection was due to expire. He called prior to doing repairs and the inspection. His price is a little higher than the guy I had been using, however, I rate Gary's service much higher, especially in convince and timeliness, and his preventive maintenance inspection probably saves me time and money int the long run Gary was professional and friendly during all interactions with him. Bryn was a complete jerk. He showed up 3 hours late and appeared to be stoned or something. It was a simple job and he screwed it up. And left a mess behind!! We had to pay a 2nd contractor to repair his work. Since then we have heard nothing but horror stories about him. I would never ever...

"Mike previously purchased supplies and did roofing work for us, and we were pleased. However, he noticed a faulty electrical socket connected to our heat tape and offered to replace it. He requested and was paid a substantial amount to purchase supplies for the socket and stated a return date to be three days later. He did not return, he did not answer any texts, phone calls and emails. Finally, he did respond and gave another return date which was about ten days later but still did not show up or answer texts, emails or phone calls. I am adding to this review: 3/14/2020: I have been reimbursed for the supplies not purchased and the work not done. I have added a separate review but it is still pending. The work Mike did for us was good. The first three times he responded quickly and arrived promptly as promised. Good communication is essential, and the lack of it is why I wrote the negative review. UPDATE 3/16/2020: Our roof was leaking badly. Mike responded to our call quickly, and came to help us on a weekend. He shoveled part of the roof and attended to the horrid ice dam. He returned two more times and shoveled and got rid of two more ice dams. He was a very hard worker and also seemed knowledgeable. I felt that he deserved a good review for the good work that he did on our roof. I also should note that the charge was very high, (hence the lower score for value for money) but we were glad to have someone show up to do the work. He returned the money today that we gave him to do the electrical work. (see other review by James B. - Breckenridge) I do not know why he suddenly stopped responding. I have to add because of that, I would be hesitant to consider him."

Yes, you should hire a handyman who’s licensed, certified, and insured, if possible. States have different requirements for handyman licensing, registration, and certifications. If licensing is required in your area, you may pay more for a licensed handyman with experience than one who is not licensed or certified, but you’re likely to get a better end result for your project. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local handymen guidelines.
