"It was a great pleasure to work with Paul. He is very considerate and accommodating. He communicated very well before and during the installation. He offered life time warranty of the fence, which provides peace of mind. Highly recommend!"

"Atlas Fence constructed, on site, a new wooden single gate (to replace the badly decayed gate), ensuring that the style of the gate was fully compatible with the style of the existing fence. Atlas Fence also repaired the non-aligned gate by shaving ½ inch off the gate edge. Atlas Fence cleaned up and removed all debris. Overall, Atlas Fence performed this project in a workmanship fashion---a professional job all around!"

"Chris and his employee did excellent work. He is easy to work with and is motivated to please the customer. There were other projects I needed done which he did with excellence. I appreciate his desire to do the job properly. Turns out the roof had water damage along the edge and rafter ends. Chris brought it to my attention and showed me the rotted damage. I had him repair the damage and he did excellent carpentry work. I would definitely recommend him and will be hiring him for more work."

"I know this rating seems low, but fence repair is not A-Plus main job. Todd was very nice, personable. I liked him very much, but I have no idea to this day exactly what was fixed/replaced on the fence that cost $680.00, I did hire A-plus for some electrical work and it was done timely and efficiently. I thought the price was high, but I did not get any other estimates, so my fault. I do wish that on both jobs, I could have gotten an itemized bill, ie; parts, labor etc., not just a written description."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

The average lifespan of a wood fence is 15 to 20 years, but some can last for 40 years or more depending on several factors. The type of wood is crucial; for example, untreated pine may only last 5 to 10 years, while pressure-treated pine can last up to 20 years, and cedar's natural resistance can extend its life to 40 years. Other factors include local weather conditions, with wet and windy climates causing faster deterioration, and the quality of maintenance. Higher-end wood, metal posts, and privacy fence styles also tend to last longer.

The lifespan of a picket fence largely depends on its material. Wooden picket fences typically last 10 to 15 years with regular maintenance, while vinyl and composite picket fences can last 20 to 30 years or more due to their resistance to weather, rot, and pests. Metal picket fences often exceed 30 years, especially when properly coated to prevent rust or corrosion.

The ideal distance between fence posts depends on several factors, including the terrain, the purpose of the fence, and the material used. For different types of fences, here are some general guidelines:

  • Wood and Metal Fences: Posts should be spaced between 5 and 8 feet apart.

  • Vinyl Fences: Spacing can be between 6 and 8 feet.

  • Chain-Link, Mesh, or Lattice Fences: Posts can be set anywhere from 4 to 25 feet apart, with 4-10 feet being common for chain-link.

  • Wire Fences: Spacing can be up to 12 feet apart.

You can't build a fence against your neighbor's fence if it touches or is attached to it unless you get explicit permission from your neighbor. Most municipalities recommend building a fence about two feet away from your neighbor's fence to allow access for fence repair and mowing.

Most homeowners don't need to inform their neighbors before constructing a fence, according to the law, but you will need to make sure that you’re building on the property line or on your side of the property line. Otherwise, the neighbor could complain, which would require you to tear down and reinstall the fence. In any case, keeping them in the loop is the neighborly thing to do!

Whether you inform your neighbors or not, always use property records and a land survey to ensure your fence stays within your property boundaries.
