To do the work yourself, you’ll usually need to clean your floors, get on your hands and knees to apply polish manually with a cloth, and avoid puddles and oversaturation. Hiring a professional floor polisher is usually worthwhile because they have industrial equipment that buffs and polishes in a fraction of the time and usually leaves a more even coat.

In most cases, chipped or cracked granite can be salvaged, but it depends on the size and scope of the damage. For example, a pro can smooth out small chips on the edge with polish pads or an angle grinder, but a crack that runs through the stone's surface has little-to-no chance of being fixed easily.

A floor polisher won’t remove scratches from a wood floor, but the polish can fill in surface scratches and make them all but invisible. If you run your fingernail gently over the scratch and it doesn’t catch, chances are that the polish will hide it. If it does catch, you might want to have your floors fully refinished, and you might need to have a professional floor sander in for particularly deep scratches. When in doubt, call a professional floor polisher to determine if polish will fill in your scratches or if you need more in-depth services.
