"Marlock Electric upgraded our electric service from 100 amp to 200 amp. We were installing solar panels with our new roof, and did this upgrade along with that project. Marlock was recommended to us by the contractor installing the solar panels as a company that would do a very professional job for us - they wanted to be sure the work would be done right to connect the solar system to it. Marlock did an excellent job for us - it was somewhat complicated, but they are experts who knew how to do the work properly. They explained the whole process to us and answered all our questions in a way we could understand. They added extra crew members to make sure the work was done in one day so we wouldn't need to be without electric service overnight. The work was done in a very professional manner, and the site was cleaned up before they departed. We are very satisfied with the service we received from Marlock Electric, and will call on them for any future electrical work we need to have done."

"Mike who I met from Reliable Power Systems (RPS), is professional and personable and went out of his way to treat me and my particular situation well.  Probably due to price and quality, which is why a co-worker recommended him, he is popular and therefore busy so that  maintenance visits are not usually available immediately.  However for the repair I needed during an outage, he was at my place very fast.  My generator's 'fail-to-start' happened before I bought the maintenance plan from RPS.  I figured I could do it myself, but it is not a small car engine in a box like I thought.  And now that we have medical equipment connected we need to make sure it is up and running 24x7.  Saving one fridge and freezer of food in a black out was sufficient payback for installing a generator, but keeping an oxygen pump running is critical, as is, I found, the piece of mind I get by going to sleep knowing my generator will start  everytime I need it, thanks to a proper maintenance plan.  Before I signed the maintenance contract, I did shop around some, and found that RPS adds things into their maintenance that others do not.  I asked Mike about it and he explained it to me very well, but I just can't remember the technical details.  I also found out that RPS is not as big as some companies, but to me this means I'm not getting some partly trained kid who is just rushing from job to job as fast as possible. From watching Mike work I can see that he is not only extremely knowledgeable (he mentioned something about certifications), but that he is methodical and thorough.  Those last two words describe RPS well.  And that's what I want in generator service while our life depends on it.

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

Potential benefits of using a natural gas generator include reducing your carbon footprint, lower likelihood of carbon monoxide exposure, budget-friendly operating costs, and low-maintenance, continuous fuel supply. Some possible drawbacks, though, include higher initial installation costs, dependency on a natural gas supply, and installation complexity. Keep in mind that pros and cons will vary based on the type and brand of natural gas generator.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

Whole-house generators need to be installed on level ground several feet away from walls and other objects. Because they tap into the electrical system directly, they usually need to be close to your home electrical panel for a transfer switch installation. It also helps with installation if they are near to a gas line or propane tank installation.

Yes, installing a generator usually increases your property value because buyers are getting the added peace of mind knowing they’ll be able to maintain power through blackouts. In most cases, you should see close to a 100% return on investment (ROI). Keep in mind that home generators usually need a permanent foundation, and installing a concrete slab will likely raise your property taxes slightly.
