"Luigi and his team did an incredible job replacing my front steps and all the concrete/masonry around the front of my home. It was easy to communicate with Luigi in order to figure out exactly what we wanted, and the execution of everything was flawless. I highly recommend Luigi for any brick masonry you'd need done on your home."

"I'd say that 95% went well, the remaining 5% was not up to expectation. That 5% wouldn't stop me from recommending them, but I think they need to tighten that up with me and anyone else that hires them. The sales call went well, but turns out it could have been handled a little better. One thing that I was pleasantly surprised with was the honesty. We were hoping to have these in for a specific event, the salesman told me up front that he would not promise the installation by that date, even if it cost him the sale. I appreciated that. I also appreciated the advice. We originally called regarding retractable awnings, but based on the distance they could extend and the sun angle at the time of day we'd want to use the awnings, we wouldn't get effective shade coverage and it would have been a waste of money. The only disappointment was after the fact in that there were some options we would have taken advantage of, such as zippered, removable sides and such that would have been easier and cheaper to add in during the manufacturing process than after the fact when the awnings are already installed. They came quickly, did a great job with the framing, then we waited for the fabric to be manufactured, which they only start after the framing is installed so they have exact measurements. Unfortunately they were not able to get the awnings up for our event, but we knew that was possible, so I take nothing away from them for this. I was told they tried, but these were large awnings, and it was very clearly a long shot when we signed on. They came and installed the awnings. They look great. That's where the last 5% comes into play, though. I was discussing some of the details, and the installers mentioned they could add in zippers to give us a better view of the patio from the deck, and had some other ideas. I was also told this was brought up among themselves during the framing installation, but nobody spoke to us about these details. We don't know what's possible, and they had some good ideas we would like to have ben told of. I expressed that disappointment, especially because if we add those options now, they are more difficult onsite and more expensive to install. Had we known, or at least been given the choice, we would have appreciated that very much. The fabric installers were understanding and said they would ask someone from the office to call to discuss. We still haven't gotten that call. I can call them, and most likely will, but they set an expectation for the call after knowing I was a little disappointed. I would have liked them to follow through. So the short story is, the awnings look great, they could have handled the sales/options process better, and we didn't get the follow-up after the installation as promised."

"I had concrete in my small, Brooklyn backyard (~350 sq.ft) that was cracked and uneven. I wanted to remove the existing concrete and replace it with pavers and have a new dry well and drain installed. A&A was excellent from go. Eddie is friendly, knowledgeable, and professional, and helped me refine several aspects of my project. He also listened to my questions and input as the project progressed. There were a few places where the patio work had to be coordinated with some work I was doing on my fence and ultimately, it all came together just how I hoped it would. The work was done on schedule and Eddie's team did a good job leaving things looking nice. On top of all that, it was all done at a very competitive price. I had five or six quotes, one or two of which were astronomical, and A&A's was very competitive. The quote was very fair and reflected that they are doing quality work without cutting corners. I would be happy to work with A&A again and would definitely recommend them."

"We hired JB to put in a short driveway and repair some broken concrete in front of our garage. It was a joint project with the next door neighbors, who also needed their bluestone sidewalk replaced with concrete in order to make a workable driveway. I asked if I could have the salvaged bluestone. JB took care of the city permits, and the workers were there at 8 AM, prying up bluestone and piling it neatly in my back yard. The driveway looks great."

"Kazi and his crew at Rahat are the best renovation professionals we’ve had (and we’ve had a few) in the 18 years we’ve lived in our modest two story houses in Brooklyn . Back in 2006 we started a major renovation of our house, including an extension to the backyard for a new kitchen which required considerable excavation and fill as we’re more than a couple of feet below ground level in the back there. Also, new underground drainage was put in under our brick patio. The contractor at the time built five six foot wide steps from the kitchen’s sliding glass doors to the patio. Also a cement walkway was replaced along the back to front side of the house. Overtime, some problems started to come to light. To expand and correct some of the work from 12 years ago, we decided this summer to go on Angie’s list for the first time and selected some contractors for quotes. We saw the photos of Kazi’s outdoor work in our area , and were quite impressed. We picked Rahat, which had a very reasonable quote (and not the highest). When Kazi’s first came to our house, he noticed the drainage problems immediately before we pointed them out. (During hard downpours the drain at the base of the stairs was not adequate to keep the rain water level from flooding our kitchen; also two other drains on the patio itself were not placed in a manner to catch the runoff). He also inspected the cracks that had opened up in the cinderblock support wall of the staircase and suspected that either the foundation for the supporting walls was substandard or even missing (turns out there was no foundation). He measured, making helpful suggestions and came back the next day with a very detailed and clearly written scope of work and quote. We signed. As many of the readers will attest, some contractors will start a job and show up for a couple of days and then you start seeing them less often because they’re busing picking up and starting other work . Kazi does not do that: And he has his own permanent crew of professional workers he can rely on. They started right away and they worked every weekday (even on the hottest of days of July/August) until the work was complete. And even with a company to run, it was rare that I didn’t see Kazi on site, supervising. I would continually be amazed at coming home at night and seeing, that projects I didn’t expect to see done until later in the week, had been completed the same day. As any contractor does, Kazi will offer you options on materials and added work when needed – He’s not high-pressure about them in the least. You’ll find his recommendation are almost always sound and worth doing at the time rather than waiting. As for materials, the red brick and grey granite slabs on the stairwell are beautiful and constructed with total precision. (I would recommend the granite in particular, you won’t slip on it in the rain and it really looks lovely when wet). We were so impressed than we have hired Kazi to work on a much larger project, the front! There are quite a few challenges there. We’re not sure isn’t basically unchanged from the 1890’s when it was built. So far his work has lived up to the expectations of excellence from work in our back. We’ll have a review when that’s complete."

Patios questions, answered by experts

Several types of porches are available to meet your needs and style preferences. Some common porch types include:

  • Porticos are essentially a roof over a walkway leading to the home's front entrance.

  • Sunrooms are closed-in porches that are an extension of the house with glass or plastic panels that allow optimal sunlight.

  • Wraparound porches extend around the entire home, or at least the front and one side, and offer multiple entrances to the house.

  • Back porches are an extension of the home’s floor into the outdoors. These offer more protection and privacy than a deck.

There are many materials to choose from, including picket fencing, wood slats, galvanized metal skirting, dog-ear fence panels, scallop wood fence panels, bamboo screens, and other decorative screens. You can search for materials at local big box stores like Home Depot or scour online home improvement sites. Good search terms to use are fencing, skirting, and privacy panels.

A sunroom will add more value to your home than a deck, but with a much higher up-front cost. Depending on its construction and function, a sunroom may be counted as additional living space, while a deck is strictly an outdoor feature. Both will increase your home’s value, but the sunroom will have a much bigger effect.

If you’re trying to decide between a sunroom and a screened-in porch, the right choice will depend on your priorities. A screened-in porch costs only a fraction of the price of a sunroom, but in exchange, it has much more limited use. A sunroom will add more value to your home, but at a much higher up-front cost and longer construction timeline.

Yes, it can be worth screening a porch if you live in an area with beautiful weather, since it allows you to enjoy your outdoor space longer in the spring and summer. The additional protected space may even attract more prospective buyers if you intend to sell—especially if you add seasonal features, like a ceiling fan for summer or a heater to winterize your screened porch.
