"Bobking did a great job on my house. They painted the external house, repaired my cracked chimney, laid cement in my front yard and did brick work in front to prepare for iron gate work(another company). Their customer service was great and they worked very fast. All of the work was neat and as expected. I will definitely use and recommend this company again."

"Highly recommend Torres Contracting. They did a blacktop driveway, with cobblestone border, and some cement work. It came out beautifully. Tony is easy to work with, has a great crew, and gave a fair and honest price. A+ experience."

"I am so happy that we went with Zicklin Construction to complete our renovations! They not only helped us to make our home more beautiful and accessibleâ by way of repairing water-damaged walls, updating one of our bathrooms, and building a rampâ but they did so while providing unmatched customer service and consistent consideration for my sick grandmother and her space. In addition to the aesthetic appeal added to our home, I am beyond pleased with the quality of the workmanship. I can sleep soundly knowing that everything was completed correctly. Thank you again!Â"

"As a young professional, Craig understands that doing exceptional work for his clients represents who he is. Craig was tasked with planting fruit trees and beautiful plants in my backyard many years ago. Craig put a lot of planning before embarking on the project. He was punctual and worked on the project with enthusiasm and creativity. After many years, I am still enjoying crops from my pear tree. The blackberries are my grandchildren’s favorite. Each year in early spring I send a picture of the pear tree to Craig to show him the beauty of the tree while it blossoms. I highly recommend Craig to you and assure you that you will be pleased with the outcome."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Pavers are one of the most affordable methods of creating an elevated outdoor space. Gravel is an equally affordable alternative. If your budget permits, you can look into building a permeable driveway to ensure proper drainage. Grid pavers, pervious concrete, brick, and brick pavement are all effective materials. Permeable driveways are great options, especially if you live in an area with heavy rainstorms.

A scattering of leaves won’t pose a problem through the winter, but a thicker layer of leaves may not decompose before the first frost and can instead weigh down your grass and harbor mold or fungi. A thick layer of leaves also cuts off light and air that grass needs to grow. That’s why we suggest removing thick leaf layers within several days if possible. If your lawn goes dormant over the winter and snow has already caught up with you, then remove the leaves in early spring before your grass-growing season starts so your lawn can thrive.

The landscaping elements that add the most value are often the basics. A well-maintained, attractive lawn can have a return on investment (ROI) of up to 217%. Routine lawn maintenance, such as edging and mulching, can provide an ROI of over 100%. Other high-value projects include upgrading your front walkway, which can offer a 100% ROI, and planting trees. Projects like adding decks, patios, outdoor lighting, irrigation systems, fire pits, and outdoor kitchens also add value and enjoyment, though their direct financial ROI may be less than 100% in some cases.

The best landscaping for a septic drain field is shallow-rooted grass or native vegetation that helps prevent soil erosion while allowing water to evaporate efficiently. Avoid planting trees, shrubs, or deep-rooted plants near the drain field because the roots can infiltrate pipes and cause blockages. Using mulch or gravel sparingly can also help retain moisture and protect the system without restricting airflow.

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.
