We were all set to have a new furnace installed but there was asbestos insulation, and the furnace company would not touch the project. Over the weekend Todd assured us that they would take care of us. Jeff did amazing work Monday to clear up the issue. Today, on Thanksgiving (as it is sleeting outside) we're here in house warm and dry, thanks to them."

Most manufacturers stopped putting asbestos in linoleum before 1980 due to public concerns about its toxicity. However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) didn’t ban asbestos-containing products until 1989, and a comprehensive ban was not announced until 2024. When asbestos damages the lungs it causes a condition called “asbestosis” which, unfortunately, can’t be cured once it’s damaged the lungs. This condition is chronic and any treatment is undertaken to improve quality of life. This usually involves quitting smoking, being prescribed oxygen, and undergoing lung rehab. Severe cases usually require a lung transplant.

Asbestos siding can be dangerous if disturbed because the material itself poses a health risk. Asbestos is one of the leading causes of lung cancer as it causes mesothelioma—an aggressive cancer. Asbestos can also cause irreversible damage to your lungs by creating a buildup of scar tissue, called asbestosis. It has a habit of making its way through even robust personal protective equipment (PPE), which is why it’s not recommended that you perform any asbestos work yourself.

You can cover asbestos siding with another type of siding, such as vinyl, however, this may not be the best option. Covering the asbestos siding may disturb it, releasing fibers into the air. The covered siding can also be disturbed at a later date, such as by a new homeowner who is unaware of its presence.

If you decide to cover the siding, be sure to work with a professional and follow any local building codes and requirements. It may be the case that removing the asbestos siding is the better option, rather than covering it over. 

Federal and state grants for asbestos testing and removal do exist and can help homeowners with the associated costs. In some cases, local housing grants help homeowners who have to remove asbestos as part of home repairs. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also provides funding to help schools manage asbestos removal, but it doesn’t extend to homeowners.
