"Great trustworthy Locksmith. Aaron came out on 8/29/2021. He replaced and re-keyed 6 locks for us. He arrived on time and was professional throughout the entire experience. On top of the replacement of the locks and re-keying (which was tricky since I didn't have one of the original keys) he also had to deal with a door misalignment issue at no additional charge. I would definitely recommend working with Aaron's Locksmith Service based on my experience. - Scott C."

"Al, Nick and Lou have been my trusted general contractors for more than 15 years. The house I inherited needed to be brought up to current code and required many, many different upgrades, including, electrical, plumbing, windows and railings. In addition, he has repaired storm damage and subsequent painting and drywall repairs. I also hired them to supervise the refinishing of my hardwood floors. He also is in charge of tree removal and general landscaping after storm damage. I would trust Al to do an excellent, professional job with anything that arises. He can either do the job with his crew or has a vast network of building professionals that he can call in for specialty projects."

"Clear on the phone about costs.  Came the next morning.  Gave us very good advice.  We added a job and he priced it fairly.
Next time we need a good locksmith we don't have to think.

"Elan was attentive to my repair needs. He gave me low cost and higher cost options. He guarantees the work for 2 years. The repairs were a bit more expensive than other locksmiths but he completed the job on the same day right on the spot. I will recommend Elan for future locksmith repairs."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Yes, as long as it’s thick enough for the deadbolt. Most interior hollow core doors are at least 1 1/2-inches thick, which is usually the minimum requirement for a deadbolt. You’ll want to find the lock block first before installing. Also, most hollow doors require additional reinforcement for locks, such as a reinforcement plate or plywood block.

Deadbolts are solid and durable as can be, but the pin and tumbler can still be forced open, thus making this type of lock susceptible to picking. Most types of deadbolts are harder to pick than a traditional spring-based lock, though. It requires a specialized lock pick and a tension wrench to align all of the pins, thus unlocking the door.

Smart deadbolts are a worthwhile investment for homeowners seeking more convenience, flexibility, and advanced features than a traditional deadbolt can provide. While a strong conventional deadbolt offers sufficient security for most, smart deadbolts provide significant upgrades.

Key benefits include keyless entry via smartphone, keypads, or biometric sensors, and the ability to lock or unlock your door remotely. You can also manage access for guests by creating temporary codes, eliminating the need for physical keys and the risk of them being lost or duplicated. Many models integrate with smart home systems and offer features like automatic locking, entry-exit monitoring, and tamper alerts with encryption for enhanced security.

However, there are downsides to consider. Smart deadbolts are more expensive than their traditional counterparts and rely on batteries and wireless networks to function. This dependency introduces potential vulnerabilities, such as hacking by skilled intruders and privacy concerns. Installation can also be more complex. Despite these drawbacks, the added layer of convenience and protection makes them a compelling option for many.

The cost to hire a locksmith varies depending on the service you need. Consult your locksmith about the price of your requested services before hiring for your repair or installation. Some of the most common types of locksmith services include:

  • Installing deadbolts: $40–$75

  • Rekeying: $80–$160

  • Unlocking your house: $65–$180

  • Changing locks: $50–$200

  • Installing electronic locks: $50–$500

  • Installing smart locks: $200–$800

  • Keyless locks: $50–$300

Typically, it can take around 15 minutes to rekey a lock. The time depends on the type of lock and how skilled you are at rekeying. The first time you rekey a lock, it may take a little longer. Once you get the hang of the process, it will move along much more quickly.
