"The search for a structural engineer was difficult, after being turned down by several engineering offices. M.Gillespie & Associates Consulting Engineering P.L.L.C was found, needs were described and a meeting was scheduled with Michael G, immediately. Within a couple of hours, the report was ready. "Mr. Andriani visited my property and spent a fair amount of time determining what work needed to be done. He then provided what I considered a be a fair price to perform the tree service required. On the day of the service he and a professional climber, Richard, again discussed with me what needed to be done and proceeded with the trimming. During the day we continually had conversations on my satisfaction with their work so far and what still needed to be done. At the end of the day I was very pleased with the trimming and felt that I had been dealing with professionals. They cleaned up afterwards so that there was very little evidence that they had even been there. Bob k."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

If you’re building new construction or adding onto your existing home, hiring a structural engineer is not only worth it but it’s probably required by your local building department. Structural engineers will ensure you aren’t making your home unsafe in the building process, which is crucial from a safety perspective but also a legal one. It’s also worth hiring a structural engineer if you’re making changes to structural components, like removing a load-bearing wall.

The National Association of Home Builders requires repair of any foundation crack of more than one quarter of an inch, although local regulations may vary. In general, any visible crack that is growing in size, allowing water through, or that you have just noticed, is a good reason to call a structural engineer. Cracks can be a sign of a sinking foundation, so an inspection is a good idea for your peace of mind.

A structural engineer’s report is almost always worth it, as it can help you avoid buying or overpaying for a home with structural issues. The most important thing the report does for you is provide peace of mind that you won’t have to pay thousands of dollars for structural repairs right after closing on a property.

Yes, an LVL beam is more affordable than the cost of a steel I-beam, totaling between $50 and $200 per linear foot as opposed to the $100 to $400 per linear foot you’d pay for a steel I-beam. Not only is the wood material more affordable than steel, but it’s also more similar to traditional wooden beams and doesn’t require as much retrofitting to connect joists.

Failure to compact the soil during construction is the most common cause of leaning retaining walls. In addition, poor drainage can lead to excessive water pressure behind a retaining wall, pushing against it until it begins to move forward away from the soil it is holding back.
