Small jobs welcome

"Matt was pleasant to work with and did an excellent job trimming my shrubbery and trees. He also spread mulch and edged my gardens for Spring. He did the work within the time frame we agreed upon and may be doing some additional odd jobs for me when time allows. Thank you for help Matt."

Small jobs welcome

"I had contacted Mike at Premier Medical Equipment to install a ramp for my husband who was to be released from the hospital. I had paid the down payment and before it could be installed, my husband died. I contacted Mike and he quickly returned my money. He was very gracious about doing this. Initially when I contacted him for information about the ramp, options and time frame for installation, he was very professional and helpful. He spent time answering questions and quickly sent me a quote. He contacted me to let me know when it had been scheduled for installation. I certainly would recommend this service. Although I did not ever have the ramp installed, I gave 5â s for quality of work (customer service) and value for my money since he quickly returned my deposit."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.
