Customers say: True professional

"Robert came on a Sunday morning to clear a very badly clogged bathroom sink drain and to fix two leaks under the same sink. He worked on the issues very diligently until it was completely fixed. All works great now. Robert also cleared two slow drains in another bathroom. The price that was charged was reasonable for all the work that was done. I would use RRV Plumbing again."

"Dr. Drip Plumbing team did an amazing job at my mom's house in nanuet where they were able to find a leak in the basement, which was a challenging overall job. They had to jackhammer the flooring in order to find a massive crack in a very old pipe and they were able to replace it while also fixing a leaking toilet. Very satisfied with their work and would highly recommend them to anybody. Looking for a great experience for the plumber"

"Horace from All Plumb Rooter was great! He showed up on time, was knowledgeable and patient. He got the sump pump in the basement working again and installed a faucet fixture on our kitchen sink. Would definitely recommend and use them again. 5-stars!"

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Most toilets have a 12-inch rough-in or hole, but some have 10- or 14-inch holes, which means that not all toilets fit all setups. Knowing how to measure the rough-in is essential, so you purchase a toilet that fits the existing drain hole. It can be costly to have the rough-in moved, and most stores don’t accept toilet returns.

First, check that you have cut off the water supply to your toilet. This is a project that can only be done safely if running water cannot reach your toilet fixture. If you're seeing water trickle out after you've confirmed that the water supply is shut off, you can probably rest assured that what you're seeing isn't a problem. It's common for leftover water to spill out when you're removing your toilet's fill valve. If something goes wrong while you're working on your toilet, you'll need to look at your home's policy to see if your homeowner insurance covers water damage.

A gurgling toilet usually doesn’t mean that your septic tank is full. If waste can’t drain into a full septic tank, you’ll see water and sewage backing up into your fixtures, but the air that causes gurgling is a result of poor venting. You are more likely to have a clog in your vent stack or a damaged air admittance valve.

The toilet should rest 10, 12, or 14 inches from the back wall. As for other clearances, 15 inches is the minimum distance from the flange to any side wall or nearby fixture, including the shower, tub, and sink. Modern codes also require at least 24 inches of clear space in front of the toilet.

If you notice that your toilet is leaking puddles near the base, the leak is coming from your toilet bowl, and the water could be unsanitary. This is a situation that needs to be dealt with immediately—call a nearby plumbing repair pro right away. A contained leak from tank to bowl is not as urgent a situation, but it could be raising the cost of your water bill—have it looked at as soon as you can.
