"Moved heavy boiler up difficult site. Installed in one day. Very professional and patient in detailed explanations of complex zoning issues. Prices are high in Dutchess Co. compared to other areas of NY. I generally think plumbers are a safer bet for a maintenance plan and longer lasting businesses than most HVAC companies."

"David and his crew were great! They were very communicative on what the issue was and responsive to my questions and calls. I had a pipe dug out and replaced in my yard by then. Will definitely hire them again if anything else happens. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for work done correctly."

"Exxel Heating & Plumbing (Don Mittan) was excellent right from the start, called as soon as I completed the Servicemagic application. We met the next day, spoke. The steam boiler was started on June 2, 2009, completed June 3, 2009. He was on time, clean, and an excellent professional. He completed everything he said he would, plus more. He stuck to his estimate. I would definitely, recommend and hire him again."

"He is a very nice man, easy to talk to and knows his trade. I phoned in the evening and he came the next day. It was a simple repair and he did the job quickly. Wish I knew about him a few years ago when I had a lot of plumbing work done. I told him about a noise from my boiler and he checked itI out and explained that it was working properly and did not need repair. I will definitely use him the next time I need a plumber or the boiler needs servicing.

Install Boiler FAQs, answered by experts

It can take anywhere from four hours to three days to replace a boiler with a new one. How long your particular boiler installation takes will depend on whether you need a gas line installed and if you’re switching to a new boiler system.

Replacing a combination boiler or standard boiler with the same system should only take four to six hours. Meanwhile, switching from a conventional boiler system to a combination boiler system could take a few days.

Heat pumps are significantly more efficient than boilers, typically providing three to four times the amount of heat for the electricity they consume. While boilers run on fossil fuels, heat pumps use only electricity. This efficiency can lead to long-term savings on operating and maintenance costs. However, heat pumps have a higher upfront installation price compared to boilers. Despite their lower efficiency, boilers remain a popular choice for many homeowners, with 8 million in the United States alone, due to their lower initial cost and less intensive installation process. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your home's infrastructure, your budget, and your personal heating priorities.

An HVAC system typically lasts between 10 and 30 years, with an average lifespan of 15 to 25 years. The longevity of the system is influenced by factors such as the quality of the unit, usage frequency, local climate, and how well it is maintained. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, filter replacements, and professional inspections, can help maximize its lifespan. Different components within the system have varying life expectancies. For example:

  • Furnaces: 15 to 30 years

  • Boilers: 20 to 35 years

  • Air Conditioners (AC units): 12 to 20 years

  • Heat Pumps: 10 to 20 years

  • Ductless Mini-Splits: 10 to 30 years

A common HVAC rule is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of living space, you need 1 ton of heating or cooling capacity. Now that you know this common rule, you also need to know that it isn’t very accurate, and a dedicated pro wouldn’t use it for your home. If you talk to a pro who won’t or can’t perform a proper Manual J calculation, consider hiring someone more thorough.

Most home boilers will need an expansion tank. That’s because these boilers are closed-loop systems, where the water is trapped. An expansion tank is needed when the boiler heats the water and it expands, allowing air to condense in the tank to make room for the water. Other types of boilers don’t use an expansion tank, such as traditional steam boilers, but these aren’t as common. And hot water tanks may be able to use a pressure release valve instead. When in doubt, call in a pro to take a look.
