Most trees can be successfully transplanted while they are young, but pines, walnuts, and some oak tree varieties are more difficult to move because their root systems grow deeper than most other trees. It's easy to misidentify trees that appear to be maple trees due to similarities in leaf shapes. Sweetgum, sycamore, and yellow poplar all have leaf shapes and appearances similar to maples. The fact that around a dozen maple tree varieties exist, only about half of which are considered common, makes misidentification an often typical occurrence.  

You may need a permit to chop down a tree in certain situations. Some residential areas are under regulations from local governments, and cities may want to control what trees are planted or cut down to influence appearance, prevent invasive species, and more. The same permitting rules apply for homeowners associations. Check with your local government and homeowners association to determine whether you need a permit for this task.
