"The first mistake was in their measuring and I ended up with too big of an insert. (This was almost eight years ago, and I let it go, although unhappy.) Because of the size miscalculation, installation took much longer. Come dark, the work quality seemed to change. In the end I was told nothing was getting in my chimney and they did not install an actual chimney cap. The resulting problem of 2018... This spring, a bird made it all the way down to my unit, alive. Affordable wouldn’t take care of anything except to say I could book a cleaning for inside the insert, which wasn’t the problem. Luckily I found a company that would help. Upon removing the insert, they found debris accumulated in the liner, and multiple dead birds. (The new bird had died, and there were apparently others prior.) This hazard had been ongoing for years, unbeknownst to me! Affordable said I should have called sooner?! Communication was drawn out for months, so it’s now October and I finally know Dave is not accepting any responsibility in my $891 repair bill that stated: *intake liner not to top of flue *open hole in top plate *no animal protection present *birds have entered into flue area, old smoke chamber, and have nested *unit must be removed and cleaned *new liners and termination cap required for safe, efficient venting. Needless to say I am very disappointed in my company choice and certainly do not recommend Affordable Heating."

Gas Leak Repair questions, answered by experts

You can and should vent the gas from your hot water heater to the outside of your home. Traditionally, these gases were vented back to other gas appliances, like stoves or furnaces, but many jurisdictions have outlawed this practice due to the risks it provides.

Most water heaters today use atmospheric venting that exhausts the gas out of the home through a pipe.

The easiest way to empty a propane tank is to simply use it until no propane remains. If you’re short on time and need a faster solution, transfer the propane to another tank instead. Wear leather gloves to protect your hands, then connect the hoses from both propane tanks and seal them tightly. Turn the knob to open the supply tank valve on the full tank and let it run until the pressure pushes all the propane into the other tank. When all propane is transferred, remove the hose and seal each tank.

A plumber or certified gas technician is responsible for capping gas lines. Gas lines require expertise and understanding of safety standards to ensure it’s properly sealed. Your local regulations may also have specific requirements for capping gas lines.

All U.S. states require permits for gas grill installation, so you’ll have to get one before you move forward with your project. Permits help ensure that the gas line runs safely to avoid gas leaks and explosions. Gas line permits can usually also only be pulled by certified plumbers, which means you’ll have to hire a professional from the start. The permit for a gas line installation for a gas grill usually costs between $100 and $300. You can contact your installation company or building department for more accurate pricing.

Capping a gas line costs approximately $125. The final price varies from $75 and $150 depending on your contractor’s hourly rate. To completely remove a gas line and cap it at the base can cost up to $250. Most contractors will charge a flat fee instead of by the hour since capping is often part of a larger project.
