"Had the underside of my cabin sprayed with foam insulation. I couldn't be happier. The floors were MUCH warmer this past winter. As a couple unexpected bonuses, the floors were much quieter, no creaking and the overall warmth of the cabin was NOTICEABLY warmer.. work was completed sooner than expected at a reasonable price! Thank you! Mike S."

"

They are an Orkin-kind of dealer; they are all over Orange County, New York. I actually have an annual contract with them. They are real expensive. I now have a different technician. He is not as thorough as the other guy. I had to actually watch him this time. I have not had the opportunity to call them and talk with them about it. They are incredibly expensive and I did not mind paying that when the first technician was here because he was thorough. Their punctuality has been very, very good throughout. The guys who have been here have been very professional. Until I find somebody better or as good I will continue to use them.

"R-Factor Insulation Company does very good work. They insulated my crawl space and did a wonderful job. The owner Mr. Knapp was very professional and came out and gave a free estimate on the work. The job estimate was right on the price with no cost over runs at the completion of the
job. I had other estimates that were much higher on the same work to be done."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

DIY insulation installation is feasible, particularly for basic rolls or batts, if you have the right protective gear and knowledge. However, hiring a professional ensures even, full coverage for maximum efficiency.

Canned spray foam has an R-value of R-3.7 per inch. However, it’s not great for use as insulation. Also known as single-component spray foam, it doesn’t expand as much as two-part types that work for insulating the whole house. Save the canned foam for gaps around doors and windows.

To cover your HVAC ducts and air vents during construction, use plastic sheets or drop cloths secured with painter's tape. Be sure to cover all supply vents on your floors and walls, as well as the larger HVAC return vent, which is typically on the ceiling. While canvas drop cloths can also be used, they may not catch all the fine dust. It is crucial to shut off your HVAC system or at least the zone where construction is happening. Running the system with vents sealed can put significant strain on the blower motor and air handler. For additional dust containment, you can also hang plastic sheets over doorways to separate the construction area from the rest of your home.

Although the cost might seem high, winterizing your home is important for your health and the structural integrity of your home. Winterizing will keep your home warm and toasty during the cold months and prolong the life of your appliances, windows, pipes, sprinkler system, pool, and more.

Single-pane windows might let in the cold, but if you’re not ready for a long-term solution or window replacement, there are quick fixes to keep your space warmer. Start by sealing gaps with weatherstripping or caulking around the frame to block drafts. For an extra barrier, apply window insulation film to the glass, trapping an air pocket between the film and the window. Thick curtains or thermal drapes can also help keep the chill at bay. And if you’re in a pinch and looking to get creative, bubble wrap can provide a surprisingly effective layer of insulation—just spritz the window with water and press it on, bubble side in.
