"Kevin and his crew did an incredible job building our two tiered, wrap around deck with stairs leading down to the back yard. They rebuilt my front porch steps and reinforced my old deck as well. All of this was done in about a week, and they came in at the exact price that was quoted from the beginning. Kevin also came by and fixed a barn door for us when we needed it in an emergency. Great guy, great craftsmanship. We are looking forward to hiring him for all major home renovations in the future!"

"Jeffrey is a very hard-working and personable individual. He makes every attempt to provide an honest and professional assessment of your needs. I have no real complaints regarding his work or work ethics. There were some permit issues that could have been handled, slightly better, but I donâ t see it as a hurdle. He made every effort to ensure that when he left my property, the deck was in the best shape he could make it! I will likely be hiring him again, to correct an issue with a retaining wall that we have. As we are all aware, cost of materials is extremely high still. Jeffrey, again, made every effort to ensure I didnâ t spend more than I needed to. I think him and his team for doing more than adequate job on my deck. And I hope to see him again next year!"

"If I could give 10 stars, that still wouldn’t be enough!!! Where can I even begin?? Kenny and his team were hired to install a Trex deck with handicap accessible ramp. My mom was in a skilled nursing facility and was coming home, but didn’t have a way to get into the house because of the steps. Kenny understood the situation and fit me in and completed the project just in time for her to come home….They were lifesavers!!! Kenny showed me different photos of his work and we decided which would be best for my situation and my mom’s home. Kenny and his team were very knowledgeable, professional, courteous and showed up when he said they would!! His prices were very reasonable and their work was impeccable! I will definitely be hiring them for future projects and highly recommend them to anyone looking for having projects done right the first time!!!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Composite decking requires a solid foundation or substructure for support. This base is typically a frame composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame can be built from various materials, such as composite, plastic, timber, or metal, depending on your budget, deck type, and environmental conditions. For maximum stability, a professional deck builder may recommend installing this frame on top of a solid concrete base. It is best to discuss the most suitable substructure design and materials for your specific project with a professional.

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

The overhang, or nosing, of deck steps is another area that will be covered in building code requirements. The noses on your deck steps should have a minimum overhang of ¾ inch. For safety, usability, and code compliance, the nosing of deck steps should not extend past 1¼ inches.

Composite decking might cost more upfront, but it delivers value in terms of durability. Unlike wood, composite material resists common deck problems such as rotting, fading, warping, and all the other things you don’t want a deck to do. The extra processes lead to a higher price tag, but you’ll save big in maintenance costs down the road.
