"Question above did not allow me to specify the nature of the waterproofing that was done. He stopped water from seeping through the floor of the den. Gregg is old school, a man of his word, not primarily out for profit and truly committed to getting the job done even if repeat visits make it not cost effective for him."

"When it rained my basement would get 2-3 inches of water. Tim and his team redirected all of the drain pipes (5 in all), reshaped the slope of the land surrounding my house, planted grass seed, and left the yard spotless. Now my basement is drier than Arizona in mid-July. These guys are pros, they finished in a day. It was a pleasure to see these men work! Their price was more than fair. You can't go wrong with DIGGS! Thank you, Tim!"

"The guys at first choice waterproofing are great. I had them come to my home to try to figure out why I was having water in the basement. Before they came by I had about 5 other companies take a look at the basement to give me their thoughts. No one actually found out what the issue was. First choice was able to diagnose my problem (simply a disconnected furnace tube) and saved me from having to spend thousands to install a new drainage system. I appreciated honesty especially because no one else found it and told me to install a new system. I highly recommend First Choice because they are professionals but above all else they are honest and will give the project the attention it needs."

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

As the first layer of water protection for your roof deck and the building materials below, underlayment is designed to prevent water damage, so it’s okay if it gets wet. However, you shouldn’t rely solely on underlayment for protection. If rain interrupts your roof project and you have all of the underlayment down, you’ll likely be fine, but you should install shingles over that layer as soon as possible, as long-term exposure can lead to water damage.

A sump pump can remove excess moisture from under a house if standing water is present. Other ways to protect your crawl space from moisture include installing a vapor barrier, using a dehumidifier, installing insulation, and using a fan to dry the space. Finally, keeping your gutters clear of debris and positioning your downspouts away from the home’s foundation can prevent moisture from getting into the crawl space in the first place.

Underfloor insulation alone will not cause moisture and mold, but improper installation can. Although the purpose is to seal any drafts, your subfloor still needs ventilation. If you seal the area too tightly and prevent all airflow, this can cause moisture to get trapped. This moisture eventually leads to mold and—if your floors are wood—rotting.

Yes, you can technically make a crawl space liveable, but the only way to do so is by converting it into a basement. While some crawl spaces are big enough to walk through and store large items, they lack appropriate insulation and space to be liveable.

If your basement often leaks after heavy rain, it’s probably caused by hydrostatic pressure. When the ground is saturated with water, it can put pressure on the exterior of your home’s foundation, causing cracks in the basement wall and pushing water through any existing weak spots. Over time, hydrostatic pressure can cause structural damage to your home.
