Mold doesn’t require much airflow to make it out from behind walls and into your living space, making you sick. HVAC systems can actually pull the mold from behind walls and spread it through your home. While the mold may be out of sight, moisture transfer from the wall can also spread the mold from behind the wall into your living space and air. Any cracks in the walls or bad insulation only compound this effect. 

The best way to measure moisture levels in drywall is with a moisture meter. Moisture meters feature small probes that you insert into drywall (similar to pushing a pin into the wall). Ideally, you'll take moisture readings at several locations on the wall to get a general idea of the moisture level.

Vermiculite insulation that comes from a particular mine before 1990 is likely to contain asbestos. This is particularly true in the U.S. However, not all types of vermiculite insulation contain asbestos. Since you can't detect the presence of asbestos without special equipment, it's best to assume that the insulation contains the dangerous mineral and to either leave it alone or hire a professional to handle it.

The microscopic asbestos fibers do not cause eye irritation, throat irritation, or lung irritation. If you are inhaling fibers, you will not know it. This lack of immediate symptoms is one of the reasons why asbestos is so dangerous. You cannot know for certain if you are inhaling fibers, which is why you must wear safety gear if you could have any chance of an exposure while working.

Depending on the state of humidity in your home, you may not actually see lower utility bills due to the humidifier running on a near-constant basis.
