"HR Tile provided top-notch service and quality super quickly! This was the first large renovation I had done as a first time homebuyer and I couldn't be more pleased with the overall experience and results. I look forward to working on more projects with this contractor in the future. Absolutely fantastic results!"

"After having my existing floors refinished very poorly by another company, I knew I would not be using them to sand and stain brand new unfinished hardwood that I had installed in the rest of my house. I had called Sal based on a recommendation from a contractor. He came to my house the same day and gave me a very reasonable estimate shortly after he left. He was very responsive and easily reachable for any questions I had before and during the work. His crew was neat, effective and did a beautiful job on my new floors. My only regret is not calling Sal sooner and hiring him for the first job. I would highly recommend him and his company and I plan on using them to redo the terrible job that was done on my other floors."

Customers say: Quick response

"This was a 2 bathroom job, working with Joe was a very good experience. Joe was very patient with me while I was going back and fourth over my tile choice. Joe and his worker were very respectful, clean, and quiet, I was more then happy about the way my bathroom turned out, it is everything I hoped it would be and more. I would recommend Joe Salvati to anyone who is looking to redo their bathroom."

"I used the services of Westside Building and Restoration, Inc. a month ago for gutters and rebuilding my front porch. I was so happy with their work, a month later I had them install hardwood floors. Candi met me at the wholesalers on a Saturday to view floor samples, discuss price points, etc. I appreciate that the foreman, Bucky, came to my home very early in the morning before I left for work so we could discuss any questions or concerns I had. It is very much appreciated that Bucky is a good listener and is also very good at explaining the process. And although I did not meet the rest of the crew, I want to thank them for everything they did. Next up, installing a bannister and spindles. Thanks to Westside, my home improvements make my home feel and look like a â cozy cottageâ . . . just in time for the holidays. Thank you all for a job well done!"

"We have a smaller upstairs bathroom that had not been touched since 1975. The shower had been unusable for over a decade due to leakage. The space had to be completely gutted down to the studs and completely redone. The contractor we had used several times over the years retired, so we needed someone new who we could trust. Radical Renovations (Angelo) was recommended to us by N & S Supply in Kingston and I'm SO happy we hired him! He's professional, responsive, patient and finds solutions to all issues that invariably come up when you're dealing with old homes. Plus, the crew who he brought in to work with him was also pleasant and professional. I would absolutely hire Angelo again...in fact I already am!"

"When Dave and the guys started to remove the back porch windows to get at the post, they saw the porch was not built right and had no header. The whole porch was taken apart, the rotted post was replaced and all structural issues were addressed. When it was rebuilt, it was finished in the original 1940's style of the house with new wainscoting on the outside, my storage bench was built back into the inside. And a new two tone tile floor was laid. All the interior trim matches what had previously been installed."

"Anton and his team did a great job with our home. The guys did high quality work and really made our home look good again. He was very responsive to questions and issues. Pricing was fair given the scope of work. Anton is trustworthy and reliable. It’s clear he wants a happy customer by the end of the project. Would definitely hire his team again."

Small jobs welcome

"Joe and Joe (Father and Son Team) installed a kitchen back-splash for us, and we are very happy with the communication, and scheduling for the tile installation. We are very satisfied with the quality and craftsmanship of the final tile installation, their price was very reasonable, and they cleaned up before they left. JAC Creative Stone Works exceeded our expectations, and we would contract them for future projects without hesitation. Thanks Joe and Joe!"

"These gentlemen were responsible, respectful , hard working with attention to detail. They did not only do cabinets. They redid our kitchen- did flooring, cabinetry, lighting, backsplash for kitchen and 1/2 bath, as well as helped with design. Their suggestions demonstrated knowledge of design and function. Communication was reliable and responsive. We are delighted and will ask them back to do other jobs for us! Highly recommend!!!"

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Porcelain and ceramic tiles are made from clay, but porcelain tiles are fired in a kiln at a higher temperature. This makes them more durable, but it also means porcelain is more expensive than ceramic at $3 to $5 more per square foot.

Even with the higher price point, many people choose porcelain over ceramic because there are more color and design options.

When choosing between porcelain and ceramic tile, the best option depends on your specific needs, budget, and project application. Porcelain tile is generally more durable, denser, and harder than ceramic, making it a good choice for busy, high-traffic areas. It also offers superior moisture resistance, making it ideal for moisture-retaining spaces. However, porcelain is typically more expensive, and its hardness can make it brittle, potentially causing it to crack if a heavy object is dropped on it. In contrast, ceramic tile is a more budget-friendly option with lower material and installation costs. It is softer and easier to work with, making it a great choice for DIY projects. While not as durable as porcelain, ceramic is still a quality material suitable for many home applications, particularly small, decorative projects.

Thinset mortar is the best adhesive for ceramic tiles on concrete. It is easy to work with and has a slower dry time than mastic or epoxy mortars. This longer dry time gives the installer more time to adjust tiles, which is especially useful for DIYers who may not have tile installation experience. It can also be built up to help level any depressions or gaps in the concrete subfloor.

Travertine is a natural stone, while porcelain is ceramic. You can enjoy the best of both worlds with porcelain travertine tiles. Some people prefer porcelain to travertine because it doesn’t require regular maintenance and it’s easier to clean. Porcelain travertine looks like the real thing but only costs $3 to $6 per square foot.

Yes, you can use paint if you want to refresh your tile countertops. However, you must be mindful of the type of paint you use. Look for options explicitly created for tile that are also waterproof and durable. Over time, the paint will chip, so this is not considered a long-term solution for busy kitchens.
