"Would not recommend for any project. Wanted more money than was agreed & walked off leaving his partner to collect payment. We agreed on $3,500 for labor & my husband would help as a go-fer, using our tractor to move the pre-built sections of deck, post hole digger & other tasks. We also provided a cement mixer & most of the hardware & lumber. The job started off wrong & went downhill. Since the deck was placed right at the edge of the house, there was no way to build a landing & tie in the ramp without going 6 ft. into the driveway. The 5 posts to attach the deck & roof, vary in distance apart by as much as 1 ft. The roof rafters vary between 24" & 28" apart, vary in length by 3" & most are on an angle. The roof overhang was to be 2 ft. but is only 16". The metal roof panels were cut too short & are uneven, so, no gutter. Now the faceplate & deck get soaked when it rains. After 4 days, Dean said he wanted $4,500 for the work done so far & extra for the stairs, landing & gutter."

A tree growing close to a house can cause problems, but cutting it down isn’t always the best solution. Trees planted close to your home could damage your foundation as their roots grow. In addition, they can drop large branches on your house, make it easier for critters and insects to access your home, and encourage mold growth. But if the tree has been there for a long time, it may not pose a risk to your foundation, and it could be more beneficial—not to mention cheaper—to strategically trim it instead. You need to remove all branches affected by Dutch elm disease. If your tree has several affected branches, you will probably need to remove the entire tree. First, consult a pro to be sure that you’ve correctly identified it as an elm tree. Make sure the tree is properly disposed of with a plastic covering or through debarking, chipping, or burning.

There are a few general rules to follow that will help you prune your trees correctly. One of the most important rules is to prune during the correct season for the type of tree you have. Typically, pruning should be during late winter. For younger trees, you should not remove more than a ⅓ of the tree's crown when pruning. Also, remember to remove dead and diseased branches first, then proceed with pruning the rest of the tree.

It may not be worth it to rake every leaf in your yard, but it’s necessary to remove the majority of leaves to prevent them from smothering grass growth on your lawn. However, raking leaves isn’t your only option for leaf removal. You can remove leaves easily with a leaf blower or compost or mulch them with your lawn mower to repurpose them to help grow your garden or yard.

Late winter is ideal, but if you’re pruning apple trees in the spring, prune them as early as possible in the season. You want to ensure your tree is just creeping out of dormancy and hasn’t started pushing out new growth. If you prune your tree too late into spring, you generally won’t see results until the following year.

That said, there’s no pruning season for unhealthy growth. Remove dead, dying, or diseased branches as soon as you notice them, regardless of the time of year.
