It’s okay to paint over wood paneling, but you should be sure to use a primer first. You may also need to sand it before painting, depending on the paneling’s condition. Painting your wood paneling can give it a fresh look and make your room feel new.

While flat and satin finishes are ideal for garage or front doors, siding, and trim, gloss and semi-gloss are more common on shutters. That’s because these types of finishes highlight this proportionally smaller exterior home feature, adding both contrast and layers of texture to the overall facade. Other types of finishes aren’t off limits, but you’ll have more success by choosing one that provides a nice sheen.
