"C2G was excellent during the entire process. they had a quote to my in less than 24 hours and promptly answered my questions when I called them. Once I selected them they were able to schedule the job just a few days out and I could not have been more satisfied with the outcome. The two workers who did the job were knowledgeable and respectful. In over 20 years of home ownership I would have to say this was the best experience I ever had with a home contractor."

"I definitely recommend GMC landscaping to anyone looking to do hardscape work and will consider him in the future if I have any other projects that I would like to get done. I hired Jorge to install a new set of front steps and a couple relatively large retaining walls around my driveway. Throughout the entire process, he was very easy to get in contact with and if I ever had a question, he was always very prompt to get back to me. Jorge was also very flexible with me as well. I was working on a budget and was willing to put in some labor myself to tear down and dispose of the old steps and wooden retaining walls. I was able to do most of the demolition work myself before his crew came out for the prep and install. His crew are extremely hard workers. There were a few relatively hot days and a lot of the work needed to be done by hand. His guys have an extremely good work ethic and it was impressive seeing them get so much done in a short amount of time. Each one of the blocks they used weighed 80lbs+ a piece and I can tell that their work is going to stand the test of time. The walls and steps are straight and level and the quality of materials used are going to last a long time. The results have blown away my expectations. I've had multiple people stop after seeing the new steps and walls installed and asked for Jorge's information after seeing his work."

Small jobs welcome

"We would absolutely hire Cruger contracting again. James was quick to return our call and came right away, that afternoon he had come back with a very fair quote. Regraded our front lawn with 40 yards of screened soil, also laid a drainage pipe from a basement sump pump approximately 100ft. Underground. They finished the job with seeding and covered with straw mulch. Fantastic job thank you would highly recommend."

Customers say: Quick response

"After my wife and I interviewed other contractors to rectify a very difficult basement flooding problem, we met with Marc the owner of this company: (HVL&D). Everything had to be done; repairing the foundation, creating inside drains and installing two sump pumps are only some of the things that had to be done. We are a working family who has done most of all home repair work ourselves, but knew when we had met our match. HVL&D had ALL equipment needed and was able to get all the parts needed very fast! He not only accomplished what he set out to do but re-landscaped everywhere all his crew worked and went above what we paid them to do. They were extremely neet and professional. These are the guys to call for any water issues in the yard and home. Will probably have them build a deck for us when ready! VERY capable folks. They give you what you pay for!"

"Frank's crew expanded my driveway footprint, built beautiful stone retaining walls, and finished the job with the best paving work I have seen. A tip of the hat to the crew that was hard working and polite, and who worked through the extremely hot weather of late late August. Best Value out there. Thanks for the great work!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

The best type of soil to build on is a mixture of sand and clay, known as loam soil. Loam soil has the best combination of these soil types to build a foundation on. The clay particles help with water retention, so it won’t erode like sandy soil might, and the sandy particles help with drainage, so you won’t see unsafe soil expansion or have an increased risk of leaks from water sitting against your foundation.

Slab foundations are more affordable than crawl spaces because they require minimal excavation, as the slab sits directly on the ground or on footers that only sink a few feet into the ground. Crawl spaces require excavation of the entire footprint of the home to several feet below the surface. Not only does that mean higher labor costs, but more materials are necessary for the concrete foundation walls.

Tree experts don’t advise against digging through tree roots, but instead encourage caution and consultation with a local arborist to make sure you don’t damage the tree’s structure or interrupt its water or nutrient intake. An arborist can recommend specific practices when digging and help prune the roots or dig a trench for utilities with a tool that can remove soil without touching the tree’s roots.

No, fire blight does not survive free in the soil but instead is carried through insects, animals, rain, or wind during the spring. Keep in mind that it can also spread on tools, which is why you should always disinfect them in between cuts.
