"Luigi and his team did an incredible job replacing my front steps and all the concrete/masonry around the front of my home. It was easy to communicate with Luigi in order to figure out exactly what we wanted, and the execution of everything was flawless. I highly recommend Luigi for any brick masonry you'd need done on your home."

"I had a great experience and was glad I found them for my latest project at my building in Southeast Queens. Joe’s high level of communication, interest and enthusiasm for what I needed done was a huge difference from other contractors. The job involved some demolition, masonry, and ductwork. We agreed on what needed to be done, Joe gave me a fair price, his crew did exactly what we agreed on, and he checked in with me frequently to make sure that was satisfied with the work. I was very pleased. They will be my go-to contractors for future work on the building."

Customers say: Super punctual

"I recently had the pleasure of working with Long Island Mason and Concrete, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. From start to finish, their team was professional, reliable, and incredibly efficient. They showed up on time, communicated clearly throughout the entire process, and completed the job faster than I expected without sacrificing quality. What really stood out was their attention to detail and craftsmanship. The finished work looks amazing, and you can tell they take real pride in what they do. On top of that, their pricing was very fair and competitive—great value for the level of service and quality you receive. If you’re looking for a masonry and concrete company that delivers excellent work, stays on schedule, and treats customers with respect, I highly recommend Long Island Mason and Concrete. I will definitely be using them again for future projects!"

"I was looking for a contractor to lay a masonry backsplash in my kitchen. Smart General Contracting came up locally. After contacting them and telling them the measurements and the designs I wanted they told me how long it was going to take for them to make them. When they arrived with the stones they looked gorgeous and the stonework was well done! And they fit perfectly, everything went so smoothly."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Brick is the closest choice when seeking to capture the timeless look of stone with a more practical and budget-friendly option. When comparing stone versus brick siding, the price range of $200,000 to $400,000 for average brick home construction is dramatically lower compared to the cost of building a stone home. If you'd like to keep the stone aesthetic without the cost, stone veneer and manufactured stone are both less expensive than real stone.

Yes, concrete is significantly stronger than masonry, especially if the concrete pour includes reinforcements, like steel rebar. Concrete is a uniform material that can withstand compression, sheer force, and tensile force as long as it’s reinforced. Masonry involves the use of mortar or grout to connect individual building materials, like brick, stone, or tile. Mortar and grout are also reasonably strong and resist compression well, but they don’t come close to the strength of poured concrete.

The material you use depends on how hard-wearing your steps need to be and what you want them to look like. The most common stone for exterior steps is bluestone. It’s hard-wearing and durable, and bluestone steps cost between $15 and $30 per linear foot. Limestone is also a popular option and is mid-range, costing $25 to $50 per linear foot. You should always consider the specific requirements of your project before ordering any materials.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

If your old bricks are in decent condition and you have the space to store them where they’ll be protected from the elements, keeping old bricks is often worthwhile. You’d spend anywhere from $70 to a few hundred dollars to have them removed from your property, in which case you won’t be able to use them for future projects. Holding on to old bricks in good condition means you can use them later for other DIY projects, potentially saving yourself some money on disposal and new materials down the road.
