"HR Drywall and Tile did a phenomenal job on our drywall repair, tile repair and framing. They were so spectacular and skilled in finishing we had asked them to take on new projects as soon as they could (and they made it happen!) Specifically, they took what looked like a sad construction site with lopsided beams and poor drywall cuts and edges, shotty mudding and tile work (done by an awful contractor) and transformed our house into a place we can finally start calling a home. The team overall is trustworthy, thoughtful and care immensely about client happiness and it shows. Time and time, with unparalleled kindness, professionalism and honestly they delivered craft and made what could have been a stressful construction experience truly joyful: The kind of peace of mind that is truly priceless. We want almost don’t want share this review so we can keep them to ourselves, but we want only the best for their business and prosperity. Thank you for everything guys!"

"Our basement had concrete floors, bare ceiling beams, walls with some insulation covered with plastic, and a few spindly columns.  It also contained the furnace, water heater, and so forth.   Opposite there was a sliding patio door.  VAP contracting worked with us to develop the concept of the space; we did not use an architect.  They also were familiar with building code, and worked successfully with our local inspector and the inspection process from start to finish.  As the project began, further insulation was added, then drywall.  The drywall made a separate "back" room for the furnace area, which was left unfinished, but with a finished door large enough to accommodate installation of a new oil storage tank or anything else that might need doing in the future.  VAP had the idea of making a hallway in one area giving access to a tiny sauna which the previous owner had built in the otherwise unfinished basement.  The partial hallway added to the architectural interest of the space, again making it less like a casually finished basement.  The ceiling was installed with a substantial number of down lights on a rheostat, and two electric heating elements were installed along the floor on opposite sides of the room.  The spindly columns were faced with drywall and trim at the bottom, matching the trim around the base of the floors finished with Pergola composite flooring.  Access to the basement was with wood steps in good condition, and we continued the look of that wood with flooring of similar wood appearance.  For whatever reason, the unfinished basement had concrete ledges around most of the room, and once the drywall was installed we placed wood to run along the top of those ledges that matched the stairs and flooring.  The color scheme echoed the upstairs, basically off-white with a few accent areas.  The staircase was repainted the same off-white.  And so now, when walking down the stairway, it becomes a kind of entrance to the finished room.  I used to joke that contractors had their own clocks and schedules in a parallel universe separate and apart from mine. Not the case with VAP.  When we worked out a schedule, they stuck to it in every phase.  Further, the quality of the work was perfect--which gives a great sense of joy when using the room. The overall budget was less than we originally anticipated, and so the price was fair--and, no cost overruns.   For the electrical work, I mentioned to VAP that I had been using an electrician for some years.  VAP said they could do the electrical work or could work with our electrician.  They did work with our electrician, very cooperatively.  Finally, I should note that I had used VAP for some previous, less complex projects, such as exterior house painting and wood floor refinishing.  Because that work was executed so well, on time, and within budget, we wanted to use them for the more complex basement project.  We are glad that we did!

Drywall questions, answered by experts

If you suspect black mold is inside your walls, do not punch a hole in the drywall yourself to look. Call a mold inspection expert to help you. Some signs of a potential black mold infestation inside the wall include an unexplained musty, damp smell. Some people liken it to rotting vegetables. You may smell it most strongly through a wall outlet. If you and your family are experiencing constant coughing or symptoms that feel like an unexplained allergy, it could indicate black mold behind a wall.

Yes, a fan can help drywall mud dry faster by improving air circulation and reducing humidity in the room. Drywall mud dries through evaporation, so increasing airflow speeds up this process. However, you should position the fan to blow across the room rather than directly on the wet mud. This helps prevent drying too quickly, which can cause cracking. You should also use a dehumidifier if high humidity is an issue.

Fixing ceiling nail pops involves similar steps to wall repair, with the major difference being the orientation of the work. Ceiling nail pops can be more challenging because you may need to work overhead, which can be physically demanding and require additional safety precautions. Additionally, the ceiling may have different materials or finishes, such as textured surfaces, which can affect the repair process. Otherwise, the fundamental steps are the same.

Depending on the place where the cutting error occurred, you may be able to fix it. Learning how to patch a hole in drywall is challenging, but if you can tape and mud drywall, you can do it. Having said that, patching is time consuming. Early in the installation process, you may find that it’s easier and far less time consuming to just start over with a new sheet of drywall, cutting a new hole in the right spot. You may be able to use part of the incorrectly cut piece elsewhere, so it’s not completely wasted.

It is more difficult to drywall a ceiling than it is to drywall a wall, but not so hard that DIYers can’t tackle it. One of the main issues with hanging drywall on your ceiling is getting it into place. Drywall isn’t light so, if you are hanging full drywall panels, you will need at least two (it’s better with more) people to hold the panel while you drill it into the ceiling as a single piece can weigh between 40 and 60 pounds and will need to be held in place for up to 10 minutes.
