Pickett's Painting is a local family-owned business based in Vestal, NY. We have over 35 years experience in all aspects of painting: interior and exterior, commercial and residential.

"Pickett's painting is a testament to how much you can get away with when you have an affable personality, DON'T BE FOOLED. I hired Ron in March 2023 and red flags flew pretty quickly when he and his helper tracked snow in many times, taped or draped nothing and dragged furniture away from walls rather than carrying. By the end of the job we had paint along carpet in all three room's trim he painted, paint on bedding, broken furniture supports from dragging, paint on outlets and light fixtures (he removed no plate or trim covers), drip marks, missed spots in all rooms, very patchy paint coverage on trim, unpatched holes, a mess left where they rinsed brushes and massive disappointment. Pickett's is a landlord special, don't hire him if you have an ounce of care for your space or value for a dollar."

You can expect your carpet protection to last about six months to two years. It will last longer in low-traffic areas (compared to busy areas, where your carpet experiences more wear and tear). Once the protector wears off, you’ll need to call your carpet contractor to reapply the stain protection treatment and revive your carpet. 

To prep a floor for painting, start by sweeping and cleaning any loose debris that could puncture the protective material. Take out as much furniture as possible. Then lay plastic, canvas, rosin paper, or masonite sheets across the room, securing them at the edges with masking tape. Plan your painting so that you minimize the chances you’ll step in and track any splatters.

Start the first row of vinyl planks along the longest or most visible wall in the room. This will create a clean, straight foundation row to build off of. Snap a chalk line to guide the first row, and use spacers for the most precise installation—these maintain an even extension gap between the flooring planks and the wall. Finally, double-check that the first row is level before moving on to the second row. If it’s not, start over and get it right before completing the rest of the floor.

Even if you’re just replacing your carpet and not your baseboards, experts recommend removing existing baseboards before installing new carpet. This allows for a clean and seamless installation without the risk of damaging the baseboards or the carpet. Additionally, removing the baseboards gives you the opportunity to stain or repaint them as well as inspect and repair any underlying issues with the walls or flooring.

It depends on what’s important to you. For instance, if you’re looking for the lowest-priced carpet material, consider polyester. Alternatively, you could go with olefin (also known as polypropylene), another synthetic carpet material that costs about the same as polyester. Otherwise, if durability is the priority, nylon or wool would be a better choice.
