"We had a MASSIVE tree in a very tight spot. Other companies, that use lifts and other heavy equipment in order to get 'up there', had questioned their own ability to get their equipment close enough to the tree and remove it without damaging the other trees around it and/or a neighboring shed. They also needed access to neighboring properties and were uncertain they could drop the giant on the available spot. Then Alec, from Willowtree, shows up, looks up for about a minute and gets right back to me with a quote. No equipment. He climbs, secures and lowers pieces of tree, bit by bit, to his awaiting crew (also awesome guys). When there was nothing but the trunk left, he dropped it EXACTLY in the narrow available spot. And did I mention my pleads for the safety of a little plant here and a little bush there? Yeah, well: it all survived unscathed! There was never a question or a concern. He also addressed other concerning tree matters in our yard, put up a bat house for us, and more!"

"I can't say enough positive things about this group. They were punctual, professional, and showed great attention to detail. And they offered very competitive pricing to boot! They worked all day on my yard, eliminating and removing 2 large oak trees, an extremely tall hickory tree, 9 pine trees, and a "widow-maker" deciduous tree in 100 degree heat. My kids and I tried to bring them food, drinks, chairs, etc... , but we had to be EXTREMELY forceful for them to accept our offering. I'm very tight-fisted with money, but I opted to tip over $400 because of my appreciation and respect for the work they performed."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Carefully pruning small roots no thicker than three inches in diameter won’t harm the tree. However, cutting larger roots may impact the tree's stability and nutrient absorption. It's advisable to consult an arborist or tree care professional to evaluate the root's size, the tree's health, and the potential impact of cutting. Proper tree pruning techniques and timing can minimize damage, but larger root removal may necessitate expert guidance to avoid compromising the tree's overall health and stability.

As a general rule, the protected area should be about 1½ times as wide as the canopy of the tree’s leaves. This digging measurement can vary by tree species and the age of the tree. Of course, that can be a lot of fencing for larger trees, which is why our first step is about making difficult decisions on which trees to save.

Whether tree roots will continue to grow after a tree has been cut down depends on the species. Some tree roots will eventually die because they can no longer get nutrients through photosynthesis. However, other species that reproduce through root sprouts can continue to grow and produce new sprouts for seven years or more. For example, the roots of elms, ficus, and willows tend to regrow aggressively, while the roots of pines, oaks, and maples will typically die. To determine if a root system is still active, look for new sprouts on the old trunk, stump, or any exposed roots.

The best time to cut down a tree is during its dormant season, typically in winter or early spring, after all the leaves have fallen. Removing a tree during this period is advantageous for several reasons. Frozen ground helps secure the tree stump, protects the surrounding landscape from damage, and reduces the risk of the tree falling in an unintended direction. With the leaves gone, there is less risk of the tree's foliage getting tangled with other trees. Additionally, since this is often a slower season for tree services, you may be able to hire a professional at a lower rate. This dormant period is also the best time for tree trimming.

Unless there’s some sort of rule in your community’s homeowners’ association that requires you to remove a stump, there’s no law that says you have to take it out. If you’re not wedded to the idea of removing it, there are plenty of ways to get creative with this tree remnant. Using the stump as the medium for a wood carving or turning it into a planter are just two examples of ways to repurpose a tree stump.
