"They responded to my call and had someone out the next day. They explained I needed to run a new water line from the meter to the house since the water leak could not be found and with additions we have added the leak was probably underneath the concrete patio. When they came to do the work they did an excellent job and told me everything they were doing as the work progressed. Would recommend them highly."

"Benjamin Franklin plumbing went above and beyond. We came home to smell gas in the garage - called the gas company and found a leak in the boiler. The gas was shut off. I called Benjamin Franklin Plumbing at almost 7 pm. The answering service, the person on call, and the specialist who came up to incline Village to repair the boiler were responsive and helpful. The young man who performed the repair was excellent. He was professional and did an excellent job. I highly recommend their services."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

No. You should never directly drain a water softener into a sewer cleanout. This practice is illegal in many areas because it could allow raw sewage to get into your drinking water and make you seriously ill. Many places have codes requiring a specific seal, pipe, and a large air gap between a water softener and a sewage cleanout. Check out Florida's Plumbing Building Code as an example of what these restrictions might look like.

Whether you need a permit or license for a water softener installation depends on your location, as requirements vary significantly. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, some mandate a permit and an inspection, and others require both. In some areas, no special permit or license is needed at all.

To determine the rules in your area, you can contact your local building department or consult a local water softener installer or plumber. Often, only certified professionals are authorized to pull the necessary permits, and they will typically handle the entire permitting process for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to check an installer’s license status.

Yes. To get soft water, you can install a water softening system, which will replace the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium or potassium ions. Water softeners cost anywhere from $200 to $6,000, depending on the size and complexity of the system. You can either install a water softener for the whole house or just at your shower heads. If you’re sensitive to sodium or potassium, you can install a salt-free water conditioner.

Hard water doesn’t hurt, but it might feel more abrasive, especially if you have sensitive skin. It’s also about how your skin feels after bathing. You might feel as though you have a sticky film over your body because you do—it’s all that soapy residue left behind because the hard water can’t rinse it off completely.

Water softeners have many benefits. The most important one is converting previously hard water—water with too many minerals—to more usable, easier water. When we say easier water, we mean water that’s easier to digest, less harsh on skin and clothes, and builds up less in the water system. Softer water may lead to lower energy costs and will extend the lifespan of all appliances that use water.
