He gave me an honest quote and was available to start work the following day. Rodrigo sent me photos of my damaged joists and what he was doing throughout the entire project. Adjustments had to be made because my deck was 34 years old but he did an AMAZING job. " today Juan came with his helper Luis and they pulled out about 15’ x 5’ of juniper bushes on the side of my front yard. It was a mess, but they got it cleaned up beautifully and then they took down a pine tree that has been dying, we tried to restore it, but it was beyond saving. As always, they did an amazing job cleaned everything beautifully and I can’t believe how quickly they dropped that tree cut it up and had it in the trailer. It changes the look of my front yard makes it look bigger and I don’t have to worry about the fire hazard in my front yard. They even moved my bench for me, which was very heavy and next April. I have an acre lot and it had a lot of old fencing that included telephone poles and they removed all of the old fencing and replaced with 6ft chain link. "TLDR: slow, expensive, poor workmanship. I am giving them a 2 instead of 1 star just because I like Alan and his crewmen as human beings. I dont think they are necessarily trying to screw people, more just incompetent. I signed up for a time and materials contract with them because my building plan (post frame) was complex and was sure to present some unexpected challenges. $35k later I asked Alan to give me a bid to finish the project because he claimed we were 70-80% done and I was tired of watching it move slower and slower while costs mounted. He came back with a bid of and additional $54k to finish putting the roof on the place. I think this was more of a screw you I am not interested in your project anymore bid than an honest assessment of project costs. I found another honest hard working crew and they finished it for about $15k. It probably would have been even less but they had to spend a day or two fixing stuff that the Masterfield crew had messed up, mostly stuff that was far enough out of level / plumb / square that it prevented moving forward until it was corrected. Another annoying thing was that when Masterfield left, then not only took all the materials I had paid for through them on the and contract (like nails, house wrap, etc.) but the also took all my roof truss hangers and hardware, which was stuff they did not even purchase. I had to pester them for a week to bring me back my roof hardware but they kept everything else. They also mistakenly took my wheelbarrow and left their own, and they left a pile of scaffolding structural pieces that are still in my yard even after I told them multiple times that they forgot these and where to find them. Overall, I wish I dismissed Masterfield sooner but the silver lining is that I found a solid crew to work with on future projects."
