Using a shim or another type of self-leveling feet on the bottom edge of your cabinet bases will help to level them out if you’re installing them on a less-than-level surface. To make this process easier, you can add your shims before attaching the bases to your cabinets while they’re still light and easy to move around.

Whether you should mix cabinet pulls and knobs comes down to personal preference and the space you're decorating. Choosing matching cabinet hardware creates a more cohesive look, but it's not as distinct and eye-catching as a mix-and-match design. Smaller spaces benefit most from matching hardware since too many styles can visually crowd or overwhelm a small room.

If you’re looking for shelving that will stand up to years of heavy stacking, plywood is the clear winner against MDF (a.k.a. medium-density fiberboard). Plywood is a sturdy material that resists sagging, warping, and splitting, making it the perfect fit for shelving in a variety of spaces. For sheds, garages, and other environments that aren’t climate-controlled, wood or plywood is a must, as moisture and humidity will cause MDF to warp over time. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure.
