There are three main downsides to quartzite: the cost, the porosity, and the weight. As a natural stone, there’s a level of scarcity that can drive up the price of certain types of quartzite. Even more common varieties are less affordable than synthetic materials like laminate and other natural stones like granite.

You’ll also have to reseal your quartzite countertop annually to combat the natural porosity and reinforce your cabinets to account for the added weight.

It is not recommended to put a hot pan directly on a marble countertop. While marble is heat-resistant, it is not completely heat-proof, and extreme or prolonged exposure to high heat can cause discoloration, cracking, or chipping. Pans may also scratch or nick the surface. To protect your countertop and maintain its integrity, always use trivets or hot pads. Note that faux marble finishes do not resist heat and require protection from hot items at all times.

Silestone® is heat-resistant, so it can handle moderately high temperatures for a short period of time. That said, exposure to high heat can cause serious damage. You should never take a hot pan off the stove and place it directly on your countertop. Temperatures above 300 degrees Fahrenheit can leave marks or discoloration on the surface. Instead, use a trivet.

Common causes include impact, heat, and improper cleaning agents. Regular maintenance prevents major issues.

Beyond landscaping, limestone has multiple uses. For example, there are multiple pros and cons to limestone countertops, such as a lower cost compared to other types of stone and heat resistance. Limestone is also a key ingredient in limewash, a type of paint with a chalky texture. Other uses for limestone include siding, retaining walls, and mixed into cement.
