"I had just bought a house in Santa Fe that desperately needed new paint throughout to brighten the interior. There was just over a week between close and when I'd be arriving with my furniture. Several larger painting companies were booked into early next year. I found Harald on Angi-- he gave me a fair estimate and *guaranteed* he could do the whole job in a week. He started the morning after close and worked every day to get it done, even applying two coats to most walls. He was particularly adept at finding the right color that would brighten the walls/ceilings while still speaking to the stained wood doors and trim. The new paint has made a world of difference, the house looks and feels so much better. I would recommend Harald to anyone looking for someone reliable who does good quality work."

"Fernando and Sam are a pleasure to work with. Fernando is meticulous in his workmanship. We had no idea how much detail was involved in painting the cabinet doors and drawers, as well as the cabinet boxes. Much of it was done by hand with small brushes. They ended each day by cleaning their work area so we were not inconvenienced. They were prompt and courteous. Overall we couldn't be happier with the finished job."

Small jobs welcome

"This contractor did an amazing job with our home in Santa Fe. The precision painting of three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large hallway is exceptional work. The fireplace was painted beautifully as well. All of the work Luois has done in our home is exceptional. Also, the housekeeping services are phenomenal. Our place looks like a new home. Both of us can’t say enough about the great job this contractor does we give him five stars out of five. A complete A+. Do not hesitate to hire him."

"Saul Nevarez and crew did an outstanding job of prepping and fixing water damaged stucco and blemishes on the exterior of our home. They aligned Southwest Seamless Gutter to put new gutters on our home on eaves that did not have them. The lack of gutters caused the stucco damage. Happy Homes power washed the exterior, caulked seams and hairline cracks, then applied a new coat of elastomeric paint. They painted all roof vents to match the new home color. They also power washed my stand alone shop and applied a new coat of house color matching paint. They were exceptional in covering and protecting windows, brick facade and sidewalks/gravel landscape. Then they power washed all horizontal surfaces to wrap up the job. The team was very pleasant and was easy to work with. I will be using them for future home improvement projects. Thanks Guys!!"

"Van Meter Painting did an excellent, efficient, and professional job repainting my home. The owner - Mike - was courteous and professional, and was clearly knowledgeable about paint and was able to provide some valuable advice and recommendations. They were able to complete the job for a fair price within the expected time frame. I will be using Van Meter for all of my future painting needs. They run an honest business and were a pleasure to work with."

Painting questions, answered by experts

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.

Exterior paints contain more volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, making them dangerous when used indoors. Without the free ventilation of the great outdoors, it can take longer for the fumes to dissipate than interior paint. While you may notice the smell lessening more quickly, you should be wary of paint fumes inside for 48 to 72 hours after it dries.

DIY is possible with proper tools and knowledge, but professionals can ensure even application and high-quality results, saving time and hassle.

Wood stain does go bad, but it will last in the can for between three and six years, provided you use proper storage techniques. Storing wood stain in open containers or in extremely low or high temperatures will cause your wood stain to become unusable much more quickly. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.
