"We used Jose Hernandez to clean and maintain our chimney for several years before he started his own business and were relieved to find him through Angi. We'll continue to hire him once or twice a year for cleaning and, of course, if we have any problems with our wood-burning insert. He is professional, responsive, thorough and very personable."

"the job was completed by 2 men but the fence & gate are not lined up straight; more of a zigzag & gate did not close properly so I had to have someone else redo the gate closure. They did not use a plumb line; just eyeballed it... Luckily it's in my backyard so not many people see it. At least they got the job done quickly right after I moved into my new home & needed a safe place to keep our dogs.

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

You should schedule fireplace service when you notice a strong creosote odor or draft issues caused by high winds in the Sacramento Mountains. Burning local pine and piñon wood causes heavy creosote buildup, making annual inspections essential. Additionally, check for cracked masonry after the summer monsoon season. Heavy winter use in Ruidoso means your system requires regular attention to stay safe and functional against wildfire ash and moisture intrusion.

Helpful?

A standard inspection and cleaning takes one to two hours to complete. However, complex fireplace service like masonry repairs or fixing chimney crowns damaged by the freeze-thaw cycle requires one to three days. Installing a new chimney liner adds four to eight hours of labor. Because demand in NM mountain communities spikes sharply in early fall, book your service in August to avoid multi-week scheduling delays.

Helpful?

Routine fireplace service involves a thorough annual inspection and cleaning to remove heavy creosote buildup from burning softwoods. Professionals will inspect and clear your spark arrestors and chimney caps to meet NM fire codes. Maintenance also includes checking mortar joints for deterioration caused by the intense freeze-thaw cycle. Finally, contractors will evaluate your roof flashing and chimney crown for damage from heavy winter snowpack and ice.

Helpful?

To ensure safety during fireplace service, keep children and pets in a well-ventilated, separate room. High altitude causes dust and cleaning particles to disperse quickly through the air. Install and test carbon monoxide detectors, as incomplete combustion poses a higher risk at this elevation. In open-plan Ruidoso cabins, place physical barriers around the hearth to protect your family from residual ash and prevent accidental contact with the work area.

Helpful?

When hiring professionals for fireplace service, verify they hold national chimney sweep certification. Because Ruidoso sits in a remote mountain area, confirm the contractor has experience traveling to high-altitude locations. You must also hire someone familiar with local building codes for proper permit processing. Finally, choose an expert who understands regional wildfire risks and knows how to install ember-resistant chimney caps to protect your property.
