"The service man arrived right on time. He was able to trouble-shoot the problem quickly and make the repairs needed to get the system up and running again. He also inspected both of my boilers and determined that there were a few problems that should be repaired during a second visit. He also found a small leak in one of my baseboard heaters and did an excellent job replacing a poorly placed and designed valve. I found the service man to be very knowledgeable and felt all of the recommended repairs were reasonable and necessary. The final bill was a bit if a shock, but they had to make several 80 mile trips to my house from their office, spent all or part of 4 days at my house and replaced several parts, so all things considered it wasn't completely unreasonable. The main thing is they were reliable, very knowledgeable and now I feel like I have a good plumber to call when I have a problem."

Gas Logs questions, answered by experts

You may want to remove the gas line if it’s unsightly or if it’s causing a problem with future appliances. The downside is if you decide to go back to gas, you would need to run a new gas line to the area.  The average cost to run a new gas line is $550, but the installation can range anywhere from $120 to $1,350.

Call 811 to locate and mark the gas lines at least three days before digging. In many areas, you can dig within 18 inches of the lines, though in some locations, the distance may be further. Check local regulations, as you may need a utility company representative onsite when digging. Document your calls to 811 and precautions taken to avoid gas lines. A homeowner can be held liable for hitting a gas line in some cases, but contacting the proper authorities and following all guidelines can offer protection.

In North America, pipe measurements are listed as the nominal pipe size (NPS). This measurement refers to the outside diameter. As an example, a 1/2-inch copper pipe has an outside diameter of 5/8 of an inch. If a hardware store lists a pipe as having a 2 NPS, it means that all the pipes with this measurement have a 2 ⅜-inch outside diameter, regardless of wall thickness and inside diameter.

Natural gas companies advise only shutting off the gas supply at the meter yourself if you smell natural gas or suspect there is a leak, typically following an emergency. Instead, you can shut off gas to individual appliances when necessary. If you want to turn off your natural gas entirely, you should contact your utility company. You’ll generally also need to acquire a permit to work on your natural gas line.

No, fixing or patching a hole in a gas line may not seal it completely. A patch should be a temporary solution because the damaged area will be weaker than the rest of the pipe, increasing the likelihood of future leaks. Therefore, if a gas line incurs damage, call a licensed plumber and have it replaced right away.
