"Having ruled out failure of the ancient thermostat, Caesar Marti examined the furnace itself. There was significant damage to the venting system and extensive worrisome corrosion to the same. Additionally there was evidence of heater flames not going where they should and to corrosion and incipient failure to the heating unit per se. The old unit also lacked an automatic gas shutoff, so I elected, with his help and concurrence, to look into replacing the unit. Their prices for a new Trane replacement unit (and a 21st Century thermostat) were competitive and include replacing the venting for the unit through the roof (checked wholesale/retail prices online), so we are arranging for replacement of the unit next week, for which I'll submit a separate review.

Replacement was the long term solution, but he was willing to work with me on fixing odd brand heater. My choice, no pressure. The replacement was done the next working day in about one hour. Alvin came to our house on a Saturday to inspect our hot water heater that went out. He not only arrived promptly on a Saturday morning, he informed my husband and I about each step of his inspection.
